Volkswagen Tayron: Variant comparison - Should you buy Elegance or wait for R-Line?

Volkswagen has introduced a brand-new model in Malaysia, the Tayron, marking a new chapter in the brand's local SUV portfolio. Positioned between the Tiguan and Touareg, the Tayron is a premium, seven-seater SUV, designed to meet the evolving needs and lifestyles of urban consumers.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia offers the Tayron in two variants - Elegance and R-Line, locally assembled in Pekan, Pahang. While the sophisticated Elegance focuses on refined comfort and advanced technology, the performance-driven R-Line brings sportier driving dynamics and a strong road presence to the table. 

Notably, the Tayron Elegance is already on sale now, whereas the Tayron R-Line is currently available for preview only. In today’s story, we are going to compare these two variants in detail, helping prospective buyers decide whether they should buy the Elegance or wait for the arrival of the R-Line.

As we can see in the above table, the Elegance variant is priced at RM 190,660 while the R-Line costs RM 259,000 (estimated), making the latter almost RM 68k dearer than the former. The optional Volkswagen Assurance Package, which increases prices by RM 10k, includes a five-year manufacturer’s warranty, five-year roadside assistance and a five-year maintenance package.

Size-wise, both Tayron variants are almost identical, offering the same spacious seven-seat practicality. They also have the same luggage storage capacity, with a 345-litre boot, expandable up to 1,905L with 2nd and 3rd row seats folded.

In terms of drivetrain specs, both variants of the new Volkswagen Tayron are quite different. The entry-level Elegance model is powered by a 1.5-litre eTSI mild hybrid with 150 PS and 250 Nm, while the R-Line uses a more potent 2.0-litre TSI turbo with 265 PS and 400 Nm and a 4MOTION AWD setup.

As a result, the R-Line completes the century sprint in just 6.1 seconds, 3,5 seconds quicker than the Elegance. However, it is important to note that the added performance comes at the cost of fuel efficiency, with the hybrid mill returning a fuel consumption of 6.1 litres per 100 km compared to the R-Line’s 8.5 litres per 100 km. 

Both variants are equipped with a seven-speed DSG transmission and  Volkswagen Dynamic Chassis Control Pro, which automatically adapts the suspension to changing road conditions for an ideal balance of comfort, stability and driving confidence.

Should you buy the Tayron Elegance or wait for the Tayron R-Line?

Well, the answer depends on what you are looking for in a seven-seater SUV. If you prioritise value for money, fuel efficiency, and everyday practicality, you can go for the Tayron Elegance. However, if you want bold styling, exhilarating performance and a more premium ownership experience, the Tayron R-Line seems worth waiting for.
