2020 Proton X70 CKD - Variants explained

It was just recently when the first teaser of the 2020 Proton X70 CKD was released and got us pretty excited. However, before we could actually contemplate it, Proton launched the car itself. Yes, the new X70 CKD is now official and comes at a starting price of RM 94,800. It gets a handful of new features that should help Proton to lure in more customers and garner a higher sales figure. But visually it is very similar to its predecessor.

The new locally-assembled X70 is more of a facelift rather than a brand-new car. Its design remains untouched as it continues to impress us with its large dimensions - 4519 mm long, 1831 mm wide, 1694 mm tall, 2670 mm of ground clearance. However, to mark that this is the updated X70, Proton slapped on its redesigned badge on the front grille. In fact, if you will look closely you will find this new badge on the wheel caps and also on the steering wheel.

The new 2020 Proton X70 CKD has a total of four variants - Standard 2WD, Executive 2WD, Premium 2WD, and Premium X 2WD. In this story, we will explain each one of them so that you can have a much better idea as to which one would be the right choice for you.

Standard 2WD

This is the most affordable 2020 Proton X70 CKD which costs RM 94,800. For this price, you get the following features-

  • Halogen headlamps
  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • Fabric seats
  • 8-inch infotainment head unit with online navigation
  • 6 speakers
  • Rearview camera
  • Air purifier system
  • 6 airbags which come as standard across all the variants
  • 3 colour options

As for the engine, it is a 1.8-litre TGDi petrol engine which has been carried forward from the previous model. While it continues to churn out the same amount of max power (184 PS), the peak torque output has gone up to 300 Nm at 1750-4000 rpm. This has been made possible by opting for the new 7-speed DCT which replaces the old 6-speed AT and can sustain that much torque easily. This engine and transmission combination in the 2020 Proton X70 CKD specs sheet remains common for all the variants.

Executive 2WD

  • LED headlamps
  • LED daytime running lights
  • 18-inch alloy wheels instead of 17-inch
  • Power tailgate
  • Front welcome lamps
  • Leatherette seats
  • Driver power seat
  • Front seats ventilation
  • 8 speakers instead of 6

Proton has also added a new red colour option for this variant. As for the safety nets, it gets an additional two front parking sensors and the rear camera is replaced by a 360-degree camera.

Premium 2WD

Moving up the ladder, we have the Premium 2WD variant which retails at RM 119,800. It is quite expensive than the previous model and to justify the increase in price, Proton has added a handful of useful and interesting features. They are as follows-

  • Advanced driver assistance system
  • TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System)
  • Intelligent beam control
  • Four front parking sensors
  • Bigger 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Power tailgate with an additional foot sensor for convenience
  • Nappa leather seats for that added luxury and comfort
  • Front passenger power seat with ‘boss’ switch
  • 9 speakers with power amplifier and subwoofer

With the addition of a new colour option, this variant is available in a total of 5 paint schemes. It also gets active safety features like autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and blind-spot information system. These should fall under the Advanced Driver Assistance System.

Premium X 2WD

This is the range-topping and thus the most expensive 2020 Proton X70 CKD variant. It costs RM 122,800. The only difference between this and the Premium 2WD is the inclusion of a panoramic sunroof. That’s it. So if you would like to have a panoramic sunroof, then go the extra mile and spend the extra money, else the Premium 2WD variant is good enough.
