2025 GWM Tank 400 plug-in hybrid SUV debuts in China

KUALA LUMPUR: Great Wall Motor has rolled out the upgraded version of the Tank 400 in the Chinese market. The upgraded SUV boasts a refreshed design, new drivetrain setup and advanced technology. 

The Tank 400 slots between the Tank 300 and Tank 500 in the brand’s global lineup, with the latter two already available in Malaysia. While there is no information available yet on the Tank 400 coming to Malaysia, here’s a brief look at the SUV for enthusiasts eager to know what it brings to the table.

2025 GWM Tank 400: Key highlights

Dimensions

Built on a monocoque frame, the new Tank 400 measures 4964 mm in length, 1970 mm in width, and 1905 mm in height, and spans a wheelbase of 2850 mm. Compared to the Tank 500, it is 114 mm shorter and 36 mm wider.  

The approach and departure angles of the off-roader are 33 and 30 degrees, respectively, while the water depth is 800 mm, with ground clearance measured at 224 mm. 

Exterior 

The off-road SUV has a rugged off-road focused appearance with large bumpers, chunky wheel arches and aggressive design elements. The front grille features two horizontal chrome bars, mated to polygonal headlights and a black trim. 

Accentuating the striking look are body-coloured rivet details around wheel arches, LED tail lights with contrasting bumper elements, and an external spare tyre positioned on the tailgate.

Engine specifications 

The Chinese-spec Tank 400 comes in two plug-in hybrid drivetrain options - Hi4-Z and Hi4-T; the specifications are as follows -

The upgraded version also gets the brand’s third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra advanced driving assistance pack, backed by a roof-mounted lidar, and side and rear cameras.

Overall, the Tank 400 is a rugged yet modern off-road beast that offers toughness, hybrid technology, and everyday usability, making it a strong contender in the global SUV market.
