2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 launched in Malaysia, here’s all you need to know

KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes-Benz has launched the all-new fully electric version of the rugged G-Class, the G 580 with EQ Technology, in Malaysia. The SUV combines iconic off-road capability with cutting-edge innovation and luxury, representing a significant leap toward sustainable mobility.

The G-Class EV is offered in two fully imported variants - G580 EQ and G580 EQ Edition One, priced as follows -

2025 Mercedes-Benz G580: Drivetrain, range, and charging

The EV is powered by four electric motors (each producing 147 PS), capable of generating a total system output of 587 PS and 1,164 Nm of torque. The setup is paired with an integrated two-speed gearbox, enabling the electric G-Class to run from zero to 100 kmph in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 180 kmph. 

As the e-motors can offer their maximum torque from a standstill, the vehicle excels with enormous pulling power and exceptional controllability, which is quite useful for both steep inclines and loose surfaces.

The SUV comes with a 116 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, integrated into the ladder frame made from steel, which ensures a low centre of gravity and makes the entire vehicle significantly more rigid. As for protection from water and dirt, it is housed in a torsion-resistant casing, making it as capable as its ICE counterparts in terms of off-road capability. 

The battery offers a range of up to 473 kilometres (on the WLTP cycle). It is capable of charging with both AC and DC, with a maximum capacity of up to 11 kW for AC charging and up to 200 kW for DC fast charging. The latter juices it up from 10 to 80% in just 32 minutes.

2025 Mercedes-Benz G580: Suspensions & driving modes

Based on a modified ladder frame, the EV features a double-wishbone front suspension and a newly developed De Dion rear axle. It comes with adaptive adjustable damping, offering improved ride control and comfort on rough terrain. The ground clearance is measured at 250 mm while the fording depth is up to 850 mm. 

The electric G-Class can handle side slopes up to 35°, with approach/departure angles of 32°/30.7° and can achieve 100% gradability on suitable surfaces.

Speaking of drive modes, the G 580 with EQ Technology gets the following ones -

• On-Road: Comfort, Sport, Individual
• Off-Road: Trail, Rock (with LOW RANGE gear reduction)
• HIGH RANGE: Standard driving mode for better range
• LOW RANGE: 2:1 torque-enhancing gear ratio for difficult terrain

2025 Mercedes-Benz G580: Off-road features

The all-electric G-Class sets new benchmarks in the electric off-roading segment with segment-leading tech and digital precision. It comes with the following exclusive bits -

• G-TURN: It spins wheels in opposite directions to rotate the vehicle nearly in place.
• G-STEERING: It shortens turning circle off-road with the help of torque vectoring (active up to a speed of 25 kmph).
• Crawl Mode: It provides drivers with additional support when driving off-road by maintaining a pre-set speed and thus functions like cruise control for off-road driving. It has three levels - Slow crawl (2 kmph speed), Variable crawl and Fast crawl (8 kmph speed).
• Transparent Bonnet: It uses a 360° camera to display a live view under the vehicle on screen.
• G-ROAR: It mimics a V8 engine with deep, emotional sounds.
• Off-road Cockpit: This is a dedicated off-road dashboard, providing an overview of the most important relevant data for off-road driving as well as functions to support off-road driving. 

2025 Mercedes-Benz G580: Exterior

The Mercedes-Benz G580 retains the signature G-Class exterior design with the classic boxy silhouette, wing-mounted indicators, and iconic door handles. The front incorporates a distinctive black-panel radiator grille with chrome surround and an animated LED light strip, along with round LED headlights that uphold traditional styling.

The headlight supports the Adaptive Multibeam function with 84 individually controlled LEDs. Further adding a luxury touch are "Welcome home" and "Leaving home" LED animations. 

The EV rides on 20-inch AMG 10-spoke light-alloy wheels and houses illuminated stainless steel door sills and Silver EQ badges highlighting full electrification. As for improved aerodynamics and acoustic comfort, it gets air curtains in rear wheel arches and a roof spoiler lip.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ Edition One sets itself apart from the standard model with the following exclusive bits -

In terms of safety, the eco-friendly G-Class comes with several latest-gen advanced assistance and safety systems such as Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Steering Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Parking package with 360° camera, and PRE-SAFE system.
