2027 Honda Civic Type R updated with sharper front end, heated seats and improved tech
KUALA LUMPUR: Honda has updated the 2027 Honda Civic Type R in the United States, giving the FL5 hot hatch a sharper front end, some performance-related tweaks, and a cabin that is now a little easier to live with daily.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What is new on the 2027 Honda Civic Type R?
The 2027 Honda Civic Type R gets a redesigned front fascia, a deeper front splitter, improved engine cooling, revised +R suspension damping, improved Rev Match, a more direct brake pedal feel, heated front seats and more standard cabin tech.Does the 2027 Honda Civic Type R get more power?
No, Honda has not increased power for the 2027 Civic Type R. It still uses the turbocharged K20C engine producing 315 hp in the US market. This is not a full model change, so do not expect a totally different Type R here. The main formula is still the same: 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, 315 hp, front-wheel drive, and a 6-speed manual gearbox. What Honda has done instead is tighten up the details, especially around cooling, handling, braking feel and cabin comfort.
For now, this update is for the US market, where the 2027 Civic Type R will start arriving at Honda dealerships this month. Pricing starts from USD 48,695.

What is new on the 2027 Honda Civic Type R?
Visually, the biggest change is up front. The 2027 Honda Civic Type R gets a redesigned front fascia with a larger grille opening and a deeper front splitter. Honda says the changes are not just for looks either, as the new front end is meant to improve engine cooling and increase downforce.
That matters more on a car like the Type R because it is not just a styling package. The Civic Type R is still built around the idea of being properly usable on the road but strong enough to take track abuse as well. Better cooling should help the engine hold up better during hard driving, especially when the car is pushed for longer periods.
Honda has also worked on the suspension damping in +R mode. The aim is to improve the way the car follows the road while reducing bounce and harsh impacts during cornering. In normal words, it should feel a bit more tied down when driven hard, without becoming unnecessarily messy over rougher surfaces.
The Rev Match system has also been improved for quicker engine response during downshifts. The brake pedal has been revised too, with Honda adding a yoke spring to reduce play in the brake pedal linkage. The result, according to Honda, is a more direct brake feel.
Same 315 hp turbo engine
Under the bonnet, the 2027 Civic Type R continues with Honda’s turbocharged K20C engine. It still produces 315 hp, making it the most powerful Honda production car sold in the US.
The engine is paired exclusively with a manual transmission, which remains one of the biggest reasons the Civic Type R stands out. In a segment where many performance cars have moved to automatic or dual-clutch gearboxes, Honda has kept the Type R manual-only.
Honda also says the Civic Type R is the only car in its class in the US that is sold exclusively with a manual transmission. It also claims the Type R is the number one selling hot hatch in America.
Fuel economy for the 2027 Civic Type R is rated at 22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined under EPA testing.
Cabin gets heated seats and a more premium finish
Inside, the update is more obvious if you sit in the car rather than just look at it from the outside. The biggest everyday upgrade is the addition of heated front seats, which are being offered on the Civic Type R for the first time.
The front sport seats keep their red suede-like upholstery, but Honda has added a new perforation pattern with black striping. The material is still designed to reduce body movement during hard cornering, but the updated design gives the seats a fresher look.
Honda has also added Ultrasuede to the upper dashboard and front door panels. Besides making the cabin feel a little more special, Honda says the material also helps reduce glare and reflections on the windscreen.
Other cabin changes include a new diamond-pattern dashboard trim panel with a black surround, black air vent knobs, black climate control knobs, silver front door trim, darker grey door handles, darker grey console trim, and a darker grey finish for the aluminium gear knob.
There is also a new auto-dimming rear-view mirror, which should help with night driving.
More tech, including Google built-in and Gemini
The 2027 Honda Civic Type R also gets more standard tech. Google built-in is now part of the package, bringing Google Maps, Google Play and Google Gemini into the car.
Gemini replaces Google Assistant as the more advanced voice assistant, allowing more natural conversations and follow-up questions while driving. Alexa built-in is also included.
Honda has also added two USB-C ports above the wireless phone charger in the centre console.
Honda Sensing improved for 2027
Safety kit has also been updated. The 2027 Civic Type R gets an enhanced Honda Sensing suite, with improvements to the Collision Mitigation Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist System.
The system now has improved visibility for motorcycles and bicycles, while Adaptive Cruise Control gets smoother braking and acceleration response. Lane Keeping Assist has also been adjusted to better deal with road camber and other disturbances.
For the first time, the Civic Type R also comes with Post-Collision Braking, which is designed to help reduce the chances of a secondary crash after an initial impact.
Standard safety features include Collision Mitigation Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Information System, Cross Traffic Monitor, Driver Attention Monitor, Traffic Sign Recognition and Auto High-Beam headlights.
New colour for 2027
Honda is also adding a new colour called Meteorite Gray Metallic for the 2027 Civic Type R. It joins Boost Blue Pearl, Sonic Gray Pearl and Championship White, the latter being the traditional Honda racing colour most people associate with Type R models.
The engine cover has also been redesigned and is said to take inspiration from earlier Type R engines sold in Japan.
Civic Type R turns 30
The timing of this update is also significant because 2027 marks 30 years of the Civic Type R globally. The first Civic Type R arrived in Japan in 1997, and the badge has since become one of Honda’s most recognisable performance nameplates.
In North America, the Civic Type R is also celebrating its 10th anniversary.
"The legendary Civic Type R has embodied the Honda challenging spirit for three decades, leveraging our deep roots in motorsports with racetrack-proven engineering that maximizes performance without sacrificing Type R's civilized road manners," said Luis Guerra, assistant vice president of Honda National Auto Sales at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The refreshed 2027 Civic Type R honors that legacy by enhancing comfort, technology and style without compromising the exhilarating driving experience that has defined the Civic Type R for six generations."
Overall, this is not Honda reinventing the Civic Type R. It is more of a careful update to a car that already has a clear identity. More cooling, more downforce, sharper brake feel, improved Rev Match, heated seats and better tech should make the 2027 Honda Civic Type R a little more complete without changing what people liked about it in the first place.
