A 4-year long waiting period for Lexus LX in Japan

KUALA LUMPUR: The global chip shortage problem has led to several setbacks in the automotive industry. For instance, the struggle of manufacturing new cars ultimately leads to long delays in delivery.

In Malaysia, the Proton X50 SUV currently has a waiting period of six-month and if you think that’s too much we bet you haven’t heard of the condition in Japan.

As per the Automotive News report, Lexus LX due to its overwhelming demand has a waiting period of 48 months. Yes, that’s true, for a customer to get the Lexus SUV home has to wait for a good four years. The other Lexus model with a fairly long waiting period is the all-new NX that made its debut in 2021. Customers have to wait for about 12 months to get their hands on the latest Lexus SUV.

What is Lexus doing to cut down the backlog? The automaker is not taking any new orders for the LX SUV in Japan. However, the automaker is concerned that by the time the orders get fulfilled, the concerned model will get an update.

Lexus Japan has even issued an apology note on its website that when translated reads, “LX is very popular not only in Japan but also around the world, and we have received orders that greatly exceed our production capacity.”

Lexus’ parent company Toyota is also facing similar problems and has even stopped production at some of its plants in Japan. All this is due to the silicon chip shortage and supply constraints caused by the pandemic.

As mentioned above, Malaysian automakers like Proton and Perodua are also facing similar issues, however, we should consider ourselves lucky as a six-month waiting period is far better than a 4-year long period.
