All-new Golf R-Line: All you need to know

Since November last year, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia has been showing off the Golf R-Line at quite a few events. For instance, the car made its media preview in Sekinchan in November 2021, it was also seen during the launch of Golf GTI & R variants held at the Sepang International Circuit, and at many more events.

It was only yesterday that Volkswagen Malaysia revealed the official price of the Golf’s most affordable variant, the R-Line. And today, we’ll be discussing that and much more about this hot hatch in detail.

Design language

The all-new VW Golf R-Line showcases a confident, striking, and eye-catching design making it a truly modern hatch in the market with an innovative twist. The car’s exterior is evolved to include narrow LED headlights, a sleek grille which gives the car a clean, contemporary look. The imposing bumper now sits lower to the ground for more responsive performance and dynamic look. On the sides, the hatch gets 17-inch alloys along with R-line aerodynamic styling that makes it look from every angle.

The rear gets a new LED tinted tail light cluster with a dynamic sequential indicator function. All this completes the Golf R-Line’s modern and striking design.

Comfort & Connectivity

The Golf R-Line cabin focuses on design, comfort, function, technology, and personal choices. Quality at its finest, the Golf R-Line comes with R-Line sports seats with innovative design, a cleaner dashboard with fewer controls, and not to forget an ambient lighting package with a selection of 30 hues. A few key highlights include -

Sports seats in the Golf R-Line offer utmost support and comfort, thus making it the perfect mate for long drives.

A Rearview camera allows the driver to spot any obstacle that’s benign hiding behind the car. The boot-built camera not only detects stationary elements but moving ones as well.

3-zone ‘Climatronic’ system automatically ensures the flow of healthy and clean air in the cabin. The deal even gets better with the Air Care ‘Climatronic’ system that keeps fungal spores, pollen, and particulates from entering the car. The system uses an air quality sensor with an active biogenic filter that is more effective than conventional filters.

A digital cockpit comes with the latest generation of digital instruments that can be easily configured at the touch of a button.

A Discover Media infotainment system on the Golf R-Line combines connectivity and navigation with in-car entertainment; all of which is controlled via an easy-to-use 10-inch touchscreen display.

Wireless App-Connect allows for Apple/Android smartphone apps to display on the infotainment touchscreen system via Android Auto from Google and CarPlay from Apple wirelessly.

The voice control system of the Golf R-Line helps the driver and passengers select between radio stations, change course, and scroll through the address book.

Engine performance & efficiency

Powering the Golf R-line is the familiar 1.4-litre TSI engine generating maximum power of 150 PS and a peak torque of 250 Nm from 1,500-4,000 rpm. Thus ensuring superb driving pleasure along with excellent mid-range power and immediate pickup. The drive is sent to the front wheels via a fast and efficient 8-speed shift with a wire automatic gearbox that offers a relaxed and smooth hassle-free drive.

Driving dynamics

Apart from offering world-class comfort and convenience, the Golf R-Line is known for its amazing driving dynamics. The drive mode selection for instance helps the driver drive the car as per his/her personal driving style and current road & traffic conditions. Also, part of the kit is the new XDS technology which lets the driver grip the road during fast cornering, thus improving the car's response and ensuring a safe drive. Further improving the driver’s experience is the progressive steering that checks the speed and then adapts the steering for a much more comfortable and engaging drive.

Strong safety shield

The latest VW hatch is no less in the safety department. It packs several active and passive gears like - 6 airbags, an automatic post-collision brake system, rest assist, ISOFIX, and electronic stability control. Further, the car’s body is a combination of high-quality steel that is extensively engineered to protect the driver and passengers in an emergency situation.

Priced at RM 169,990, the Golf R-Line is offered in five colour tones namely Moonstone Grey, Oryx White Pearl Effect, Atlantic Blue, Kings Red, and Deep Balck. Included at this price point is a five-year/unlimited-mileage warranty, five-year of roadside assistance, and three years of free maintenance.
