Apple CarPlay system to get a complete refresh

KUALA LUMPUR: During the recently-held 2022 Worldwide Developers Conference, the tech giant Apple gave us a sneak peek of its next-gen CarPlay software. The new system will integrate deeper into vehicles and provide a reinvented in-car experience to the occupants, says Apple.

Support different aspect ratios

The upcoming Apple CarPlay system will be compatible with different aspect ratios, whether landscape or portrait. 

Power the entire instrument panel

Beyond supporting the media and navigation functions, the new Apple CarPlay system will also power the digital instrument clusters. To make that happen, the user’s iPhone will communicate with the car’s real-time systems in an on-device, privacy-friendly manner. It will show all driving-related information like speed, rpm, fuel level, temperature, etc.

Control several in-car functions

With the latest Apple CarPlay, the users will also be able to manage the climate controls, monitor air quality inside the car, activate seat heaters, and even pair the brand’s smart home tech with it.

Customisable themes

Another exciting feature to be available on the upcoming system will be the option to customise the look with the help of selectable themes, widgets and backgrounds. A wide range of options will be on offer to match the users’ personal aesthetic tastes and the vehicle's interior design.

When will the next-gen Apple CarPlay come into play?

While the tech giant did not specify any date for the debut of the next-gen CarPlay, it mentioned that the first cars to feature this new system will be announced in late 2023.

Which automakers have already partnered with Apple for this new tech?

The list of automakers who are excited to offer this new version of Apple CarPlay to their customers includes Audi, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Acura, Jaguar-Land Rover, Lincoln, Nissan, Volvo, Porsche, and Polestar. However, which of them would be the first brand to roll out the next-gen Apple CarPlay in its cars has not yet been announced.
