Chery Tiggo 7 PHEV and Tiggo 8 PHEV launched in Malaysia: Up to 1,200 km range, priced from RM129,800

KUALA LUMPUR: Chery Malaysia has expanded its electrified line-up with the launch of two new plug-in hybrid SUVs: the five-seat Tiggo 7 PHEV and the larger seven-seat Tiggo 8 PHEV.

Both are assembled locally (CKD) at Inokom, Kulim, and form part of Chery’s push to make electrification more accessible to Malaysian buyers.

The Tiggo 7 PHEV is priced at RM129,800 on-the-road without insurance, while the Tiggo 8 PHEV comes in at RM159,800.

Both go on sale alongside their petrol-powered siblings, the Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro, which remain available but are being offered with attractive rebates.

Interestingly, the pricing of the Tiggo 7 PHEV makes it the cheapest Plug in Hybrid vehicle in Malaysia, which should allow many Malaysians the opportunity to experience this type of hybrid drivetrain.

Powertrain 

Both SUVs share Chery’s CSH (Chery Super Hybrid) system, which pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged TGDi Miller-cycle engine (143 PS/215 Nm) with a 204 PS/310 Nm electric motor via a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT150).

Combined, the setup delivers 275 PS and 365 Nm (279 PS quoted for the Tiggo 7 PHEV), sent to the front wheels.

Energy comes from an 18.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, supporting up to 90 km of EV-only range (WLTP). Together with a 60-litre fuel tank, both models boast a total driving range of up to 1,200 km.

Charging options:

• DC fast charging (40 kW): 30–80% in 19 minutes

• AC charging (6.6 kW): 30–80% in about 3 hours

• 3-pin household plug: 10–100% in ~8.5 hours

This is probably one of the best features of the PHEV SUVs, as they both also offer 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) to power external devices. No longer do you have to buy an electric vehicle to enjoy this feature.

Exterior features

The Tiggo 7 PHEV rides on 18-inch alloys (255/60R18 tyres) and features a powered tailgate, LED headlights with active cornering, sequential indicators, and LED foglamps.

TheTiggo 8 PHEV on the other hand has a larger seven-seat layout and rides on 19-inch alloys (235/50R19 tyres). Visual differences from the Tiggo 8 Pro (the full ICE version) include dashed eyebrow headlamps, a chrome/black grille with unique insert pattern, illuminated Chery logo, 7-shaped bumper cut-outs, flush door handles, and revised twin tailpipe finishers.

Both SUVs claim a 500 mm wading depth, aided by the hybrid system’s waterproof battery housing.

Interior features

Tiggo 7 PHEV: Cabin highlights include a 24.6-inch dual-screen setup (two 12.3-inch displays) with wired/wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an 8-speaker Sony audio system, voice assistant, and multiple USB-C/USB-A ports plus a 50W wireless charger.

Upholstery is synthetic leather with ventilated and heated front seats (6-way driver, 4-way passenger). Extras include a cooled console box, double-glazed acoustic glass, rear AC vents, and remote engine start.

Tiggo 8 PHEV: Takes a different approach with a T-shaped dashboard, 10.25-inch digital cluster paired with a 15.6-inch Snapdragon 8155-powered touchscreen, and a stalk-mounted gear selector.

Equipment includes a Sony 10-speaker system, HD dashcam, double-glazed glass, ambient lighting, boss switch for front passenger seat, cooled armrest box, and Comfort/Sport steering modes. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, 540-degree camera view, and voice commands.

Both SUVs use synthetic leather upholstery and offer powered front seats, though the Tiggo 7 PHEV adds seat ventilation and heating.

Safety and ADAS

• Shared features: Eight airbags, AEB, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and lane change assist, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert/braking, traffic jam assist, and intelligent high beam.

• Tiggo 7 PHEV: Goes further with multi-collision braking, driver monitoring system, intelligent avoidance system, and integrated cruise control.

• Tiggo 8 PHEV: Instead features driver fatigue monitoring, but omits multi-collision braking and a dedicated driver monitoring system.

Both models carry ABS, EBD, traction/stability control, hill start assist, hill descent control, TPMS, and DVR.

Colours and after-sales

• Tiggo 7 PHEV: Offered in Phantom Grey, Khaki White, and Blood Stone Red with black roof (RM2,000 option).

• Tiggo 8 PHEV: Available in Aurora Green, Khaki White, and Carbon Black, with no colour surcharge.

Ownership package (for both):

• 7-year / 150,000 km vehicle warranty

• 8-year / 160,000 km battery, motor, and hybrid control warranty

• 5 years free labour service (six intervals)

• One-to-one battery exchange if state of health dips below 70% during warranty

With prices starting from RM129,800 for the Tiggo 7 PHEV and RM159,800 for the Tiggo 8 PHEV, Chery Malaysia now offers plug-in hybrid options in both the C- and D-segment SUV markets.
