GWM Tank 300 HEV teased for Malaysia at GWM Malaysia Media Appreciation Night, hybrid off-roader looks next in line

KUALA LUMPUR: GWM Malaysia has dropped one of its clearest hints yet that the Tank 300 HEV is headed for Malaysia.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Is the GWM Tank 300 HEV confirmed for Malaysia?

It has not been fully launched yet, but GWM Malaysia has shown the Tank 300 HEV by name on its product roadmap during Media Appreciation Night 2026.
  • What is the GWM Tank 300 HEV?

It is a hybrid version of the Tank 300, combining the model’s rugged ladder-frame SUV image with a petrol-electric powertrain.
  • What engine does the Tank 300 HEV use?

Based on overseas specs, it uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a 9-speed hybrid automatic transmission.
  • In the product roadmap slide shown during the brand’s 2026 Media Appreciation Night, the Tank 300 HEV was explicitly listed as part of the company’s upcoming line-up, ahead of a broader 2026 to 2027 expansion that also includes two B-segment SUVs, two C-segment SUVs, and one C-segment luxury SUV.

The slide shown at the event outright named the Tank 300 HEV, so this is more than just a silhouette teaser.

That would make plenty of sense for Malaysia. GWM already sells the regular Tank 300 here, alongside the Tank 500 HEV, so a hybrid Tank 300 would neatly slot between those two, giving buyers the same boxy off-road image with a more electrified twist.

GWM’s own global material also confirms the Tank platform was developed to support ICE, HEV and PHEV powertrains, so a hybrid Tank 300 has always been part of the bigger product plan rather than a one-off market experiment.

As for the specs, the closest official reference point right now is the Thailand-market Tank 300 HEV. There, it uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a 9-speed hybrid automatic transmission.

GWM Thailand lists the engine at 244 PS and 380 Nm, while the electric motor adds 106 PS and 268 Nm. GWM Global has previously quoted a combined output of 224 kW and 640 Nm for the Tank 300 HEV.

On paper, the rest of the package still sounds very much like a proper Tank. The Thailand-market car measures 4,760 mm long, 1,930 mm wide and 1,903 mm tall, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase. Ground clearance is listed at 224 mm, wading depth at 700 mm, and fuel tank capacity at 75 litres.

It also retains off-road hardware such as dual-speed AWD, electric differential locks, Tank Turn, off-road cruise control, and a transparent underbody-style view system.

Inside, the Thai-spec Tank 300 HEV gets twin 12.3-inch displays, wireless charging, dual-zone climate control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, powered front seats, a massage function for the driver’s seat, and an 8-speaker audio system plus subwoofer.

Safety kit includes adaptive cruise control, AEB with intersection assist, lane-keeping functions, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert and braking, plus integrated intelligent parking features.

If that same formula makes it to Malaysia with only minor market-specific changes, the Tank 300 HEV could end up being one of the more interesting GWM launches here.

The regular Tank 300 already sells on style and serious off-road flavour, but the HEV version adds a stronger urban-use argument, especially for buyers who like the rugged image but do not want to stomach full-time heavy fuel consumption from a conventional ladder-frame SUV.

GWM Global says the hybrid setup was designed to reduce fuel use in congestion, with WLTC consumption quoted at below 10 litres per 100 km, and lower still in city conditions.

As for the other vehicles on the slide, this is where it becomes educated guesswork rather than confirmation. Based on GWM’s current regional portfolio, the two B-segment SUVs could plausibly be something in the Jolion-sized class, while the two C-segment SUVs may point toward Haval-badged models such as the H6 and possibly H7-type products already sold in other markets.

The lone C-segment luxury SUV is harder to pin down, but a WEY-badged model would be the obvious candidate, given GWM already sells the WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV in Malaysia and has other WEY SUVs, including the WEY 03 and WEY 07, in its broader global range.

That said, the silhouettes on the slide are too generic to call with confidence, so these should be treated as informed guesses, not confirmations.

For now, the important bit is simple: GWM Malaysia itself has put “Tank 300 HEV” on a public roadmap slide, and that is the strongest signal yet that the hybrid off-roader is on its way here. Now it is just a matter of when, and how closely Malaysia’s version follows the spec seen in Thailand.
