Honda HR-V - Hits & Misses
Honda’s compact SUV, HR-V has been a constant favourite among buyers from the time it debuted on the Malaysian roads. First launched in 2015, it has emerged as one of the highest-selling models in the segment,
and while it continues to win hearts, Honda decided to give it a refresh to sustain its numero uno position. The facelifted version continues to chip in huge volumes for Honda and takes a lead in the segment.

Available in three variants, the conventionally powered HR-V is available in a single 1.8-litre engine, and there is a hybrid version also.
While the E, V and RS variants come with a CVT, the Hybrid variant benefits from a dual-clutch unit. Details of the Honda HR-V specs are mentioned in the table below.

What we like in the new Honda HR-V -
Appealing exterior
The styling on the outside is quirky with bold lines all over the body rendering a sculpted look. It varies from other Honda models in terms of design and styling, sporting a lower bonnet in front and sharp elements on flanks.
While the new HR-V has a bolder and sporty appearance, the top-spec RS grade, boasts some additional styling bits for an even sportier look. At the front, it carries Honda’s new thick “flying wing” grille, and honeycomb mesh pattern for the air-intake.
The face also features swooping headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights and chiseled bumper with large fog lamp housings. The aggressive lines on the flanks draw attention, while the alloy wheels look chic in a two-tone finish.
Viewed from the back, it looks equally impressive as the other two facets. It sports large combination LED tail-lamps, linked through a thin chrome strip, sculpted tail-gate and a large spoiler atop.

Equipment list
While looks make the first impression, the equipment list is a major deciding factor in determining the fate of a vehicle. Given below are some of the prominent comfort tech that can be availed on the HR-V based on the variant.
- Automatic LED headlamps with auto levelling
- LED front fog lamps
- Powered side mirrors with LED turn signals
- Cruise control
- Leather upholstery
- Keyless entry with push-button start
- 8-way power adjusting driver’s seat
- Sports pedals
- Leather wrapped multi-function steering wheel
- Paddle shifters

Honda HR-V safety suite
Understanding the prominence of safety, Honda has packed HR-V with a raft of safety tech. The standard kit comprises of the following features.
- Dual front SRS airbags
- Side airbags
- Side curtain airbags
- Automatic brake hold
- Anti-lock-braking system
- Electronic brake distribution
- Hill start assist
- Vehicle stability assist
- Emergency stop signal
- Rear seat ISOFIX
- Multi-angle rearview camera
- Security alarm with immobilizer
The only feature that has been left out in the entry-spec E and hybrid variants is the Honda LaneWatch Camera, which is available only with the V and RS grades. Besides, the crossover has been awarded an impressive 5-star rating in the crash test conducted by globally renowned safety entity, NCAP.

Fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain
The latest addition to the HR-V range is the new hybrid variant, powered by Honda’s 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, i-VTEC petrol engine. It works in conjunction to a 30 HP electric motor.
This set-up is supported by a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox that transmits drive to the front wheels. Speaking of fuel consumption, the hybrid version promises an excellent run of 25km/l, quite impressive for an SUV.

What we do not like in the 2019 Honda HR-V -
No Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
While it layers a large 7.0-inch touchscreen unit, the model misses out on advanced connectivity features including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, available with vehicles in this price bracket. However, it comes with a USB port, hands-free telephone, Bluetooth connectivity and accessory port.
Hatchback-like stance
Despite boasting large proportions, the crossover has been styled such that it appears like an oversized hatchback, instead of an SUV. Although, it has a raised stance, and ruggedness of a SUV, it still lacks a commanding semblance and seems more like a large, rugged hatchback than a SUV. The coupe-like styling works well for a sharp and sporty look, though it takes away the macho stance that SUVs are known for.

Cramped rear
The coupe-like styling at the side and rear adds a sporty flair to the crossover, albeit it also shrinks room on the inside, especially at the back. While the sloping roof reduced headroom at the rear (though not much), making it a tad uncomfortable for a tall passenger.

The Honda HR-V has been at the pinnacle since its introduction in Malaysia, and it continues its reign in the segment, accounting for a large part of the market share.
The stylish crossover looks sharp and sporty. It packs prominent amenities that promise a comfortable experience to the occupants. Overall, Honda HR-V is a well-styled crossover with a long equipment list that works well for it.
