Hyundai Staria EV spotted: All-Electric van on the way

KUALA LUMPUR: Although there seems to be skepticism about electric vehicles, being the most practical choice for transportation, it doesn't mean manufacturers are stopping to make them, as news has hit the internet realm that Hyundai is gearing up to bring an electric version of its Staria van to the market.

A prototype of a Staria EV has recently been spotted testing, as reported by Korean publication Mobility Post. This sighting marks a significant step forward in Hyundai’s electrification strategy, which aims to expand its EV lineup to 21 models by 2030.

The prototype, seen without camouflage, strongly resembles the existing internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid versions of the Staria. However, there are some clear differences.

Most notably, the front grille is absent, a common feature of electric vehicles due to the reduced cooling needs. Additionally, a charging port is visible on the driver’s side, and a “Vehicle for Evaluation” sticker on the windshield confirms its prototype status.

If the Staria EV shares its powertrain with Hyundai’s ST-1, an electric commercial van unveiled last year, it could come equipped with a single motor producing 217 PS, powered by a 76.1 kWh battery.

This setup offers an estimated range of 289 km on a full charge—a respectable figure, though some might wish for more range given its potential uses.

Hyundai hasn’t announced official specifications or a launch date yet, but the Staria EV is expected to debut later this year. Its addition to Hyundai’s lineup would align with the automaker’s ambitious target of selling over 2 million EVs annually by the end of the decade.

With the Staria only being available in diesel form in Malaysia, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Hyundai extend its lineup here with a hybrid version first which some markets already have.

The EV version might not reach certain markets, including ours . For now, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that Hyundai makes the electric Staria available worldwide, but at the very least give Malaysia the hybrid version, due to the rising cost of diesel fuel locally.

Currently in Malaysia, the Hyundai Staria is positioned as a no frills 10-seater MPV aimed at families and businesses needing a spacious people-mover.

Offered in Lite, Plus, and Max variants, the prices for the Hyundai people mover start at RM179,888. All models come equipped with Hyundai's venerable 2.2-liter CRDi turbo diesel mill, with an output of 177 PS and 431 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a  8-speed automatic transmission.

The Staria features a 2-3-2-3 seating configuration with decent legroom and headroom for passengers in all seats. Standard equipment includes LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, and Hyundai's SmartSense safety features.

However, higher-spec models offer more conveniences like power sliding doors and upgraded infotainment systems.

While it’s not a luxury MPV, the Staria focuses on function over frills, making it a solid choice for those prioritising seating capacity and utility in the Malaysian market.

Stay tuned for updates as Hyundai moves closer to officially revealing this promising zero-emissions MPV.
