MAS 2025: Proton e.MAS 5 previewed – affordable EV with up to 410 km range

KUALA LUMPUR: The highly anticipated Proton e.MAS 5 has made its public debut at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025, giving visitors a first look at what could be Malaysia’s most affordable electric hatchback yet. Based on the Geely Geome Xingyuan, the e.MAS 5 joins the e.MAS 7 in Proton’s growing electric vehicle (EV) lineup.

Targeting daily urban users and first-time EV buyers, the Proton e.MAS 5 measures 4,135 mm in length, 1,805 mm in width and 1,570 mm in height, with a 2,650 mm wheelbase. Although smaller than the BYD Dolphin, the e.MAS 5 offers practical interior packaging for families or city dwellers alike.

The compact electric hatchback will likely be positioned below RM100,000 when launched—reinforcing Proton’s mission to make affordable electric vehicles in Malaysia a reality.
Battery Options and Performance
Two powertrain variants are expected for Malaysia:
- Standard Variant – 30.12 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, rear-mounted motor with 79 PS and 130 Nm, range of up to 310 km (CLTC).
- Extended Range Variant – 40.16 kWh LFP battery, 116 PS and 150 Nm, up to 410 km of range (CLTC).
Both versions support DC fast charging, with a 30% to 80% top-up completed in just 21 minutes, perfect for EV users in urban and semi-urban settings.

Interior Tech and Comfort
Inside, the Proton e.MAS 5 offers an up-to-date digital cabin featuring:
- 10.1-inch or 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen
- 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster
- Wireless charger (50W, air-cooled)
- 256-colour ambient lighting
- Auto air-conditioning with rear vents
- Four or six speakers (depending on variant)
Other features include LED taillights, 16-inch wheels, halogen or LED headlamps, and powered or manual front seats.

Safety Features
Proton is expected to include advanced safety features for the e.MAS 5, including:
- Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
- Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)
- Intelligent High Beam
- Front Vehicle Departure Alert
Local Assembly and What’s Next
The e.MAS 5 will also be expected to be locally assembled at Proton’s upcoming Tanjung Malim EV hub, with deliveries expected later this year. It will join the e.MAS 7 in Proton's electric portfolio and aims to challenge competitors like the BYD Dolphin and Perodua’s EV in Malaysia’s sub-RM100k EV segment.
