Proton sold 12,692 units in April 2025; e.MAS 7 tops Malaysia’s EV sales

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton has revealed the sales numbers for April 2025. During the first month of the second quarter, the national automaker sold a total of 12,692 units (domestic, export, smart, Proton e.MAS), representing a month-on-month dip of 8.8%. However, compared to the same month in 2024, it recorded an impressive growth of 14.7%. 

Proton’s market share for the month is projected to be 20.8% based on an estimated total industry volume of 60,886 units (16.3% lower than in March due to a drop in sales during the festive period).

Model-wise sales performance 

Proton Saga	Continues to be Proton’s best-selling model with 5,213 units sold in April YTD total: 21,000 units (approx)
Proton X50	Reclaimed the lead in the B-segment SUV market with 2,389 units sold in April (Highest monthly sales this year) YTD total: 7,506 units
Proton S70	Leading the C-segment sedan category with 1,716 units in April YTD sales: 6,181 units
Proton X70	Maintaining volume growth despite new competition, with 682 units sold in April YTD total: 2,839 units
Proton e.MAS 7	Leading Proton’s EV lineup with 863 units (domestic + export) sold in March YTD sales: 2,716 units
Proton X90	Continues to lead D-segment SUV choice with 6- or 7-seat options, with 194 deliveries in April YTD total: 873 units
Proton Persona	Ranked second in B-segment sedan sales with 1,328 units sold in April
Proton Iriz	Ranked fourth in B-segment hatchback sales with 290 units sold in April

Notably, the Proton e.MAS 7 smashed the 800-unit sales mark for the first time in April. It continues to be the best-selling EV in the country and now accounts for 6% of overall Proton sales.

“Automotive sales in Malaysia continue to be robust, though as expected, TIV in 2025 sits behind the record-setting pace from the previous year. Our figures show the deficit currently stands at 5%, which is respectable after two big festive periods in the year's first four months. With many new models slated for introduction over the next eight months, expect the gap to shrink as buyers are presented with a bevy of new options,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar.

“For PROTON, the first four months of 2025 have been about consolidating our sales to build a strong base to launch our assault in the latter part of the year. Those plans have been bolstered by our robust performance in the EV market as public acceptance of the e.MAS 7 has been outstanding. With new launches in the pipeline for both our ICE and EV range, we look forward to even more sales success this year,” he added.

Proton’s export & expansion updates

With export remaining a vital focus area, Proton had its best month for export sales in 2025. It exported 520 units last month with the X50, Saga and e.MAS 7 led the way. 

After Nepal, the Proton e.MAS 7 is ready to land on Singapore shores; the EV was previewed at the recently held The Car Expo event in the island nation. Also, the locally assembled Proton X70 was unveiled in Bangladesh, set to fuel the sales growth in the market over the coming months.
