Mercedes-Benz EQG concept unveiled ahead of Munich Motor Show 2021
KUALA LUMPUR: The IAA (International Motor Show Germany), canceled in 2020 due to coronavirus is set to make a return as IAA Mobility 2021 at a new location i.e. Munich. Set to be held between September 7 to 12, the show is the first major trade show of the country after the pandemic that has open gates for visitors. A number of big auto-giants will be presenting their new stars at the show, one of them is Mercedes-Benz which has already unveiled its new range of electrified products for the show. The list includes - Mercedes-Benz EQE, Mercedes-Benz EQB, Mercedes-AMG EQS, and Mercedes EQG concept.
This is the first time we are seeing the electric G-Class, although in a concept form. The automaker confirms that it is a "near-production study.” In terms of exterior design, the electric equivalent of the 40-year old off-road luxury icon retains its rugged character while incorporating the body panels of the second-gen G-Class.
We can also decode some EQ-specific design cues like the illuminated fully covered front grille and the two-tone exterior shade. Mercedes-Benz designers further loaded the off-road vehicle concept with illuminated side guards, aerodynamic bumpers, exclusive 22-inch alloy wheels, and roof-mounted LED bars. There is also a black spare-tyre holder on the rear that has a lockable box to store the charging cable.
Regarding the EQG interior details, the German automaker did not spill the beans as of now, although it does share some basic details on the drivetrain. The SUV will have four electric motors set up on board i.e. one motor for each wheel and a shiftable two-speed gearbox. Although, it did not reveal the power numbers of the motors and battery pack. The EQG range is also under the wraps for now.
As for the electric G-Wagon off-roading potential, the company says that it will have “a climbing capacity of up to 100 percent on the suitable ground”, just like its ICE-powered cousins.
Upon arrival, the Mercedes-Benz EQG will rivals against the likes of other forthcoming electric off-roaders viz. GMC Hummer EV, electric Ford Bronco, and Jeep Wrangler EV.
