Mitsubishi Evolution might make a comeback soon
KUALA LUMPUR: Mitsubishi Motors defended the discontinuation of the EVO super sedan series saying that it was only done for good. Also, the company’s sales record showed that the last few models of the Evolution series struggled in the department. However, for a long time now, the Japanese automaker has been talking about the reborn of the EVO nameplate as a hybrid or performance SUV.
Now, after the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, many things have changed. This new alliance gives all the three brands a lot of support and confidence to go further with their future plans. As for Mitsubishi, it now gets technical support from the other two for the all-new EVO 11.
In addition, Mitsubishi is also planning and preparing to make a comeback to the world of motorsports. And to do so, it would capitalize on history; we are talking about the ultra famous Lancer Evolution, introduced in 1992.
As per sources close to Mitsubishi Motors Japan, the company aims to provide the car with performance that’s “superior to that of competition cars”. However, they want to maintain versatility across the car’s several body forms - a hatchback with 5 doors or 4-door sedan.
The same sources also suggest that the future Lancer EVO might have a few arear in common with the current Renault Megane RS. The sharing of Megane RS drivetrain with the Mitsubishi’s upcoming vehicle comes under the recent Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi platform sharing scheme. Besides, the upcoming EVO will for sure come with Mitsubishi-developed all-wheel-drive system; it is the same S-AWC tech seen in the Evo X. The Megane RS is the most powerful car in the company’s range and makes 300 hp. However, the new EVO might as well add a hybrid system that’ll boost the power figure to a good 350 hp.
All Mitsubishi EVO fans should tank Osamu Masuko, Mitsubishi Motors President, as he is a big part of the Lancer Evolution revival plan.
