The company said registrations for the Proton e.MAS 5 had passed the 5,000-unit mark nationwide as of February 2026, putting it at the top of the local EV sales chart.

The model got off to a strong start this year with 3,068 units delivered in January, followed by another 1,562 units handed over in February. Taken together, those figures suggest the car is still finding steady traction with Malaysian buyers, especially among those looking for a more accessible entry point into EV ownership.

Photo by Adam AubreyThe Proton e.MAS 5 is currently one of the most affordable EVs in Malaysia, priced from RM59,800 for the Prime variant and RM72,800 for the Premium (on-the-road without insurance).
It comes in two variants, both using a rear-mounted electric motor driving the rear wheels. The Prime produces 79 PS and 130 Nm, while the Premium steps up to 116 PS and 150 Nm for a bit more punch.
Battery sizes differ depending on the variant. The Prime uses a 30.12 kWh LFP battery with a WLTP range of about 225 km, while the Premium gets a larger 40.16 kWh battery and up to 325 km of range on a full charge.
Charging is fairly quick for a car in this price bracket, with DC fast charging taking about 21 minutes from 30% to 80%, while a 6.6 kW AC home charger takes around 4.3 to 5.9 hours to charge the battery fully depending on the variant.
