Proton launches new X50 in Trinidad and Tobago; strengthens global footprint

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton’s bestselling B-segment SUV, the X50, received a significant makeover in 2025, targeting younger buyers with a more appealing design and innovative tech. The upgraded X50 has now reached the shores of Trinidad and Tobago, making it the second export market entry to receive the model after Brunei.

The launch of the all-new Proton X50 in Trinidad and Tobago underlines the brand’s growing export ambitions as it continues to strengthen its presence in international markets.

New i-GT 1.5TD engine, design updates, and feature enhancements

With local distribution handled by Ansa Motors, the new Proton X50 is offered in a single trim in Trinidad and Tobago - 1.5 TD Premium, powered by a new i-GT 1.5TD 4-cylinder turbocharged engine tuned to generate 181 PS of maximum power and 290 Nm of peak torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via an optimised 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission.

Designed to meet the rising expectations of global customers, the new X50 features a more commanding exterior appearance and a refined interior with an upgraded infotainment system offering enhanced connectivity, usability and overall driver interaction.

As for safety, the latest Proton X50 features advanced driver assistance systems, including a 360-degree camera and intelligent parking assist, complemented by a suite of safety technologies.

Speaking at the launch, Marc Pontifex, General Manager, New Vehicle Sales at ANSA Motors, highlighted the model’s strong value proposition: “The All-New PROTON X50 offers a premium driving experience at a competitive price point, making advanced automotive technology more accessible to a wider range of drivers across Trinidad and Tobago. This latest iteration further strengthens its appeal as a smart and stylish SUV for modern lifestyles.”

Strengthening Proton’s export market presence

The introduction of the new X50 in Trinidad and Tobago highlights the national automaker’s growing footprint in the region and further strengthens its presence in the global market. With exports being a key pillar of the company's sales growth, Proton exported a record-breaking 6,000 cars last year, the highest volume since the beginning of the Proton-Geely partnership.

Upon introducing the new X50 in the Caribbean nation, Edmund Lim Meng Thong, Chief Executive Officer of Proton International Corporation Sdn Bhd (PICSB) said, “Trinidad and Tobago is a key market for PROTON in the Caribbean region and plays an important role in our broader export strategy. The introduction of the All-New PROTON X50 there reflects our confidence in the market’s growth potential as well as the strength of our local partnership.”
