Proton previews hybrid and smart vehicle technologies at GATE 2026

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton is showcasing its latest technologies at the Global Automotive and Technology Expo 2026 (GATE 2026), currently ongoing at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC).

    Five key technologies on display

    Proton showcases five key technologies at the event shaping its next phase of growth. These include - 

    • HEV technology: It demonstrates the automaker’s growing electrification capabilities and the technologies supporting the transition to lower-emission mobility.
    • Electrical and electronic architecture: The foundation that enables vehicle systems to communicate and supports the integration of intelligent functions.
    • 1.5-litre i-GT engine technology. It showcases a new generation of efficient turbocharged performance already experienced by customers in the Proton X50.

    • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: These illustrate how sensing, alerts and driver-support functions can contribute to safer and more confident driving.
    • Infotainment and connectivity: It previews technology developed with ACO Tech to deliver more intuitive, localised and connected in-car experiences.

    “PROTON has changed significantly since our partnership with Geely began. We have renewed our model range, strengthened engineering and manufacturing, developed new energy vehicle capabilities and brought more advanced technology to Malaysian consumers. GATE 2026 allows us to show that progress through the systems behind our vehicles, not only the vehicles themselves,” said Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, PROTON.

    Proton Dedicated Hybrid Engine

    As mentioned above, Proton showcases its new hybrid engine, which is likely to power the brand’s upcoming AMA02 vehicle, which is said to be based on the Saga

    The HEV drivetrain combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, a one-speed dedicated hybrid transmission, and two motors - P1 for engine starting and power support, and a P3 dual-motor system, serving as the main driving motor and supporting energy recovery during deceleration. 

    Developed to support a quieter and smoother drive under suitable conditions, the system features an EV Mode, where the vehicle can move using electric power under suitable conditions. 

    Proton receives energy-management certification 

    During the GATE 2026 opening programme, Proton also marked its achievement of obtaining ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management Systems certification by the British Standards Institution (BSI). 

    The automaker became the first passenger vehicle manufacturer in the country to receive this certification, highlighting its efforts to monitor, control, and continuously improve energy performance across its manufacturing operations.
