Volkswagen Golf R-Line launched in Malaysia, RM179,990 early bird for first 50

KUALA LUMPUR: Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has officially launched the Volkswagen Golf R-Line for our market, expanding its Golf line-up alongside the newer Golf GTI that was introduced earlier.

The Golf R-Line is being rolled out with an early bird offer of RM179,990 for the first 50 owners, and that price includes Volkswagen’s Assurance Package (VAP).

After the first 50 cars, the recommended retail price is RM185,990, also inclusive of VAP. The Peninsular Malaysia price list also shows an on-the-road price (excluding insurance) of RM186,580.

VAP itself is listed at RM10,000, and the package includes 5 years free maintenance, 5 years warranty coverage, and 5 years roadside assistance. The maintenance coverage is 5 years or 75,000 km (whichever comes first), with service intervals every 15,000 km or 12 months. Warranty coverage is stated as 2 years manufacturer warranty plus 3 years extended warranty, capped at 150,000 km within the 5-year period.

For units sold without VAP, the documents also outline a 2-year warranty (stated as unlimited mileage) plus 5 years roadside assistance.

The Golf R-Line sold here is locally assembled (CKD) at Volkswagen’s Pekan plant, and VPCM highlights underbody refinements and aero work aimed at improving airflow, stability, and fuel efficiency.

Powertrain, 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrid with 7-speed DSG

Under the bonnet is a 1.5-litre eTSI mild-hybrid powertrain combining a turbo petrol engine with a 48V mild-hybrid system. Output is 150 PS (110 kW) and 250 Nm, with peak torque available from 1,500 to 3,500 rpm.

Drive goes through a 7-speed dual-clutch DSG (listed as a dry dual-clutch unit) to the front wheels. Performance figures include a 0 to 100 km/h time of 8.6 seconds, with an approx. 50-litre fuel tank. Combined fuel consumption is listed at 5.5 L/100 km.

The car also features battery regeneration (recuperation energy recovery during braking) as part of the mild-hybrid system.

In terms of size, the Golf R-Line is listed at 4,289 mm long, 1,789 mm wide, and 1,483 mm tall, with a 2,631 mm wheelbase. Luggage capacity is listed at 1,237 litres.

Visually, the R-Line package brings the familiar sportier look, including:

• R-Line front bumper and radiator grille

• R-Line rear bumper with chrome exhaust finishers (left and right)

• R-Line side skirts

• IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlamps with High Beam Plus

• Dynamic Light Assist (advanced high-beam control)

• LED daytime running lights

• 3D LED rear lights with dynamic turn signals

• Illuminated front VW logo with light strips

• Surround lighting with coming home, leaving home function

• Illuminated door handle recess

• VW logo puddle lights

• Tailgate with integrated rear roof spoiler

Wheels are 17-inch Coventry alloy wheels (7.5J x 17) wrapped in 225/45 R17 tyres.

Colour options listed for Malaysia are Grenadilla Black, Kings Red, Moonstone Grey, Oryx White, and Anemone Blue.

Interior, 12.9-inch MIB4, Digital Cockpit Pro, HUD, plus the R-Line touches

Inside, the headline upgrade is the 12.9-inch infotainment system with Volkswagen’s MIB4 interface. It comes with built-in navigation, plus preloaded Malaysian navigation data with 2D and 3D map views.

R-Line-specific interior items listed include:

• Black headliner

• Brushed stainless steel pedals

• Leather-wrapped multi-function sports steering wheel with physical buttons

• Carbon Grey trim on the dash and front door panels

• R-Line fabric and ArtVelours microfleece upholstery

Driving, Dynamic Chassis Control, driving modes, and chassis hardware

On the driving side, the Golf R-Line comes with:

• Driving profile selection with modes listed as Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual

• Progressive steering

• XDS electronic differential lock for traction and handling support

• 4-link sports suspension

Safety

Safety equipment includes an anti-theft alarm system with interior monitoring, backup horn, and towing protection, plus an electronic engine immobiliser and wheel locks.

Airbags are listed at seven, including a centre airbag, along with curtain airbags for front and rear passengers.

The IQ.DRIVE suite includes:

• Auto emergency braking (Front Assist) with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring

• Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

• Travel Assist

• Lane Assist

ISOFIX is provided via two rear ISOFIX child seat anchors, left and right.

VPCM’s own positioning is straightforward, this is meant to sit as a more lifestyle-leaning Golf next to the performance-focused GTI, and the launch is meant to strengthen the Golf line-up locally.
