2020 Jeep Wrangler scores three-stars at ANCAP

KUALA LUMPUR: The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) conducted a series of tests on the updated Wrangler. The car, with the addition of active safety technology for 2020, scored a total of three-star ratings. However, Jeep remains behind from getting the five-star ratings from ANCAP due to its structural shortcomings.

The 2020 version of the Wrangler, known as the JL is all set to come equipped with autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring as its standard feature. The other safety features for the occupants of the car consists of a combination of dual frontal and side airbags,

which offer protection to both the chest and head of front-seat occupants and also come as a standard. This has lifted its Safety Assist score from 32 per cent to 51 per cent for the present year. Also, the new Wrangler managed to secure an impressive five-star car in child occupant protection with a score of 80 per cent.

"Consumers should be aware that the a-pillar and cross-fascia beam failure, footwell intrusion, high seatbelt loads and excessive pedal movement have not been addressed and remain a risk for occupants," said James Goodwin, chief executive of the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) safety body.

The American automobile company has significantly improved its rating from a poor one-star ANCAP rating for its previous generation models to a moderate three start for the future 2020 models. However, head-protecting side airbags are not present for rear seating positions and lane support system is not available in the vehicle.

The new and updated variant of the Wrangler was first introduced in Australia and New Zealand in April, earlier this year. The four-door variant with a diesel engine of the car was tested for the ANCAP safety tests.
