2020 Proton X70 CKD - Maintenance guide

The national car manufacturer, Proton recently rolled out the locally assembled X70 in the country. First launched in 2018, X70 was retailed as a completely built unit earlier. In comparison, the new version sees some improvements over the preceding model. These changes have been made based on feedback received from the customers. A new transmission has been added to the line-up, which was missing previously; besides, Proton is offering an additional early bird package to the first 3000 customers at a premium of RM 1,740. It includes an extra 4GB data (per month) for the first five years. Besides, an accessories package can also be availed for RM 2,000 which consists of magnetic sunshades, door visors, boot organizer, boot tray, floor mats and a dashcam.

Speaking of Proton X70 CKD price, the variants get slightly cheap, which works well for the SUV. As for maintenance cost, local assembling brings down the overall expenditure as compared to the CBU version, how and what we will discuss below.

The power on the 2020 Proton X70 CKD is sourced from the same 1.8-litre, four-cylinder, TGDI, turbocharged petrol engine, used in the pre-update version. It comes linked to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with manual mode, a replacement to the previous six-speed auto box. As for output, the turbocharged unit makes 184 PS of maximum power, and a top torque of 300 Nm, up by 15 Nm compared to the previous model. Proton has dropped the AWD drivetrain from the line-up owing to low demand, which means the X70 CKD is available with a 2WD drivetrain set-up only. As for fuel economy, it has improved by 13 per cent to 13.2 km/l from the previous 12.8 km/l.

With the new X70 now being assembled locally, the maintenance cost has come slightly down in comparison to the CBU version. Proton is also offering a 5 year/100,000 km. In comparison, the CBU version requires oi change much sooner at 60,000 km/36 month, than the CKD model which needs it at 90,000 km/54 month mark. While the cost of maintenance in both CBU and CKD versions is almost the same, the major difference can be seen in the third and fifth year, with the transmission oil change required in the fifth year. With the new Proton routed as a CKD, it is more affordable and receives improvements over the previous version based on the customers’ feedback. It surpasses the predecessor on several fronts, thanks to the latest changes. A new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox has been added to the range, which replaces the previous six-speed unit. Overall, it is a mild facelift and sees a slight price drop courtesy local assembling.

The 2020 Proton X70 CKD price for the base variant is RM 94,800 and the next variant in the range (Executive) is available at an additional cost of RM 12,000. While the Premium grade comes for RM 13,000 over the Executive and the fully-loaded to-spec Premium X is priced at RM 122,800. It gets an additional sunroof over the regular Premium, which costs RM 3,000 more.
