Meet Mercedes-Benz’s new off-road-ready wagon, the C-Class All-Terrain

KUALA LUMPUR: For the ones who feel like an estate car is not suitable for off-roading, and an SUV is too high-legged, the German auto giant Mercedes-Benz rolled out an all-rounder model called the C-Class All-Terrain. To nail all sorts of terrains, the rugged vehicle gets a four-wheel-drive setup, extra ground clearance, and distinctive body highlights. Let’s have a look at the details.

As compared to the conventional C-Class Estate, the All-Terrain has around 40 mm more ground clearance and larger wheels (size ranging from 17 to 19 inches) that help it to ride different tracks. The increased ground clearance increased the vehicle height to 1494 mm. Also, the length and width are increased slightly to fit in the wheel arch linings. Further, it is equipped with comfort dampers and larger steering knuckles.

The two added drive modes are Offroad and Offroad+. The former handles rugged terrain, while the latter paired with Downhill Speed Regulation is good for steep grades.

The C-Class All-Terrain gets its power from one of the two available engine options - a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol mill or a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel, both paired with the integrated starter-generator mild-hybrid tech. The former churns out a maximum power output of 254 bhp, whereas, the latter delivers 261 bhp. A nine-speed automatic gearbox is available as standard.

Coming to C-Class off-road design features, the car gets a distinctive radiator grille, new bumpers, simulated underride guard at the front and rear, and wheel arch linings. It also features an optional Digital Light setup, which adds powerful LEDs to the headlight clusters. The system gets activated when the driver chooses any of the above-mentioned off-road driving modes and lits up a wide-angle ahead for better visibility.

Inside, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz C-Class All-Terrain continues to feature an array of luxury features just like the standard car. These include a 12.3-inch driver digital display with a new “Off-Road” menu, an adaptive and intuitive MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system, and the latest generation of driving assistance systems.

The new C-Class All-Terrain is set to make its world premiere at the upcoming Munich Motor Show in September and is expected to hit the European showrooms later this year.
