2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe first official images are out

KUALA LUMPUR: While we have seen the next-generation BMW 2 Series Coupe in several spy shots, here comes the first official glimpse of the model. The automaker recently previewed the coupe in a series of camouflaged photos and also released some of its initial specs ahead of the full reveal that is likely to happen soon. 

According to BMW, “the final phase of the series development process for the new edition of the BMW 2 Series Coupé has begun with the dynamic testing and tuning of its drive and suspension systems under racetrack conditions.” 

The German auto giant confirmed that the coupe underpins the company’s Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform while retaining the rear-wheel-drive setup. It also revealed that the upcoming M Performance version will equip the ongoing inline-six engine, which has now been re-tuned to make a maximum power output of 369 hp transmitted to both axles of the car through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Compared to the outgoing version, it churns out an additional 34 hp with an almost 50:50 weight distribution. The static torsional stiffness of the car has also increased by around 12%, as per the automaker.

“By extensively testing all drive and chassis systems, the development and test engineers ensure that the engine’s performance characteristics go hand in hand with precisely controllable handling in every situation, fascinating cornering dynamics, optimised traction in all weather and road conditions, and perfectly balanced ride comfort,” says BMW.

Coming to the 2022 BMW 2 Series cosmetic tweaks, the camouflaged images of the prototype do not reveal much but do hint that it will avoid the polarizing kidney grille design available on the 4-series coupe. The fresh exterior design is also likely to coincide with improvements in aero efficiency with elements like a new front lip spoiler, air curtains, air deflectors, and redesigned rear axle cover. 

Other notable highlights are trapezoidal-shaped exhausts, flared wheel arches, and blue-painted brake calipers. The previously leaked photos also showed the new tail lights of the model. Further, rumours suggest that the automaker will not roll out the convertible model for this generation model that is set to enter production in late summer 2021. 

The sale of the 2022 BMW 2 Series is expected to commence in the international market towards the end of the year.
