2023 Perodua Axia: All you need to know

The year has only begun and the Malaysian auto market is experiencing an influx of new cars. Included in the list of new cars are - the 2023 BMW 3 Series, 2023 BMW M2, 2023 Range Rover, and not to forget the 2023 Perodua Axia.

Today the focus is on the national automaker’s latest launch, the 2023 Axia and we’ll be discussing the same in detail. The car is a treat for customers looking for a nice and affordable option with a new platform, a new powertrain combo, a larger footprint, and a super stylish cabin. Thus, making the new Axia a completely new car.

The above-mentioned prices are on-the-road with insurance. The car’s retail price is higher than before (4k to 6k) which is justified by the car’s improvements.

Platform

The new Axia is built on the latest Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform, making it the third model in the Perodua’s lineup to benefit from the said platform after the Alza MPV and Ativa SUV. With the new DNGA platform, Perodua is taking a pretty substantial generational leap forward from the existing platform.

The all-new Axia features a new design language accompanied by a larger footprint. The new model is considerably larger in metal and the previous-gen model doesn’t need to be beside the new one to confirm the growth in measurements.

The 115 mm of the extra length of the new Axia doesn’t translate into more legroom, as the car's tandem distance of 910 mm is good enough. The extra width of the new model translates to the new model's larger booth.

Improved ergonomics & aerodynamics

The new model shows improved diving position and ergonomics with the steering angle more upright and the accelerator pedal position optimized for good. Also, the new steering tilt adjustment.

The new Perodua hatch showcases square cut lines and a bluff face. The car’s aerodynamics are enhanced by 10%, all thanks to new design improvements, new spoilers, and subtle lines.

Weight & strength

Bigger cars generally experience the weight issue, especially the ones with more features. However, thanks to the new DNGA platform the 2023 Axia is not only stronger but lighter as well. The car experiences minimal weight gain weighing just 30 kg more than the previous-gen model at 890 kg.

Powertrain

The new Axia is powered by a new powertrain combo including the carryover naturally-aspirated 1.0-liter engine generating a maximum power of 67 hp along with a peak torque of 91 Nm. This time around the mill is paired to a CVT unit replacing the long-serving 4-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Thus, bridging enhancements to both the car’s performance and fuel efficiency.

The D-CVT (Dual-Mode CVT) unit was first introduced in the Ativa. Here the engine torque goes through a torque converter and into the input pulley, before getting transferred to the output pulley through a belt, followed by the wheels.

At higher speeds, the D-CVT shifts into the split mode, providing more efficient power transmission with decreased belt drive rotation.

Fuel consumption

The new gearbox not only greatly changes the car’s driving characteristics but also boosts its fuel economy. The car’s fuel consumption in the NEDC is up by 8% from 21.6 kmpl to 23.3 kmpl. The mileage is also improved via the car’s more slippery shape.

As mentioned above, the new Axia’s price hike is fully justified by its enhanced feature kit. The cars’ standard specs kit now includes the -

Move a little above on the variant list and the hatch gets added gears like - keyless entry with electrostatic touch sensor, auto headlamps, LED headlights with manual leveling, LED positioning lamp, follow me home lamp, LED DRLs, powered ORVMs with LED turn signals, and auto high beam.

On the inside, the higher-spec trims benefit from tilt adjustable steering, four speakers, a keyless push button, a digital AC control panel with memory, semi-bucket seats, and a powered mode setting. Limite to the top-spec AV model is a 7.0-inch digital instrument panel with steering controls, a 9.0-inch touchscreen head, leather seats, and leather-wrapped steering.

Safety

The all-new Perodua Axia achieved a four-star safety rating at the recent ASEAN NCAP crash test. The credit of which goes to its fully-stocked safety kit that includes -

• Two airbags
• Rear parking sensors
• ABS with EBD & brake assist
• Hill-start assist
• Vehicle stability control
• Traction control
• Seat belt reminder (front & rear)

The higher-spec model further benefits from the front corner parking sensor. While limited to the top-spec model is - six airbags, a reverse camera, lane departure warning & prevention, blind spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and ASA 3.0 including AEB.

In other news …

• Second-generation Perodua Axia gets the obligatory GearUp accessories catalog with less equipment on the exterior and more focus on the interior. The kit includes - coil mats, footwell lights, carbon-fiber look scuff plates, and a luggage compartment tray
• So far, the 2023 Axia have received 20,100 orders with 6,500 new orders and 13,600 converted orders (old to new Axia)
• The new Axia is available at as low as RM 440 per month down payment and installments
