Denza N9 debuts in China - Drone launchpad, triple motors, crab walk & more

KUALA LUMPUR: BYD-owned Denza has been garnering much love and attention from Malaysians, and the reason is its all-electric premium MPV, the Denza D9. While the Chinese marque is making waves here, it continues to expand in its home market, China, with the launch of its new model, the Denza N9.

The Denza N9 is a large SUV that aims to compete with BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the luxury segment. It is offered in both plug-in hybrid and pure-electric versions.

Cutting-edge technology & performance

The Denza N9 is the first SUV equipped with BYD’s e3 “Yisanfang” technology, which enables advanced features like a crab walk, tank turn, and high-speed tyre burst stability control.

The plug-in hybrid version is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine tuned to deliver a maximum power of 204 hp and a peak torque of 325 Nm. It is mated to a 46.9 kWh BYD Blade battery, offering an all-electric range of 202 km (CLTC cycle). Combining petrol and electric power, the PHEV cruises up to 1,302 km. 

The Denza N9 EV, on the other hand, features three e-motors (one at the front and two at the rear). The front motor produces 268 horsepower and 315 Nm of torque while the rear units kick out 322 hp and 360 Nm of torque.

In terms of performance, the Denza N9 runs from zero to 100 kmph in 3.9 seconds, making it one of the fastest luxury SUVs.

Luxury and comfort

The latest Denza SUV boasts a spacious Interior with a 2+2+2 seating configuration. It can accommodate six suitcases, and six backpacks for six passengers. Along with a horizontal storage compartment (for 47-inch golf bags), the vehicle has 46 storage compartments across the cabin.

Adding to the comfort are powered-adjustable seats, foldable tables, 50W wireless charging, ventilation, heating, and massage functions, and an 11-litre refrigerator supporting both cooling and warming.

Next-gen cockpit and infotainment

The advanced cockpit of the Denza N9 incorporates BYD’s DiLink 150 system, featuring - 

• 17.3-inch 2.5K infotainment unit
• 13.2-inch 2.5K co-pilot display
• 50-inch augmented reality head-up display

Also part of the kit is a 26-speaker Devialet sound system, a 17.3-inch rear ceiling screen, and AI voice assistant & Karaoke mode.

Smart features and autonomous driving 

The Denza N9 incorporates an intelligent vehicle-mounted drone system, developed by BYD and DJI (a leading Chinese tech company specialising in drone, camera, and imaging solutions). It allows customers to control a drone from a car, useful for aerial photography, navigation, or security purposes.

The SUV also features "God’s Eye B" (DiPilot 300) ADAS pack, powered by a 128-line lidar, 5 millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic radars, and 14 cameras. These sensors enable advanced features like automatic parking assistance, remote control parking, automatic emergency braking, emergency lane keep assist, and blind spot monitoring.

The Denza N9 price in China starts at CNY 389,800 (approx RM 237,774) and goes up to CNY 449,800 (approx RM 274,353).
