BYD Sealion 05 electric SUV revealed in China; Will it come to Malaysia?

KUALA LUMPUR: The world's leading manufacturer of electric vehicles, BYD, always stays in the headlines due to its latest developments. This time, the Chinese marque is drawing attention with its new all-electric SUV, called the Sealion 05.

The new BYD Sealion 05 is part of the brand’s "Sealion" line-up of SUVs which comes under the Ocean Series product line-up. It will be officially launched on March 25 in China.

Dimensions

The Sealion 05 is a compact SUV that slots between the Atto 3 and Sealion 7 in terms of size. It measures 4520 mm in length, 1860 mm in width, and 1630 mm in height. And spans a wheelbase of 2720 mm. The EV also houses a 110-litre frunk, touted as the largest in its category. 

Drivetrain and range

While no official details are yet available on the Sealion 05 drivetrain setup, the Chinese media speculates that the EV will be offered in two permanent magnet synchronous motor options generating 188 hp and 215 hp levels of output. 

As for the battery, it will come mated to the Blade lithium iron phosphate unit in two configurations - 50.048 kWh and 60.928 kWh, offering a cruising range of 430 km and 520 km, respectively.

Design and features

In terms of design, the pure EV looks different from the plug-in hybrid Sealion 05 DM-i. Inspired by the brand’s Ocean Aesthetics design language, it features a closed front fascia with C-shaped daytime running lights connected with an LED strip in the centre. The rear features wave-like through-type tail lights and an illuminated BYD logo.

• Vertically- oriented air-conditioning outlets
• 50W wireless smartphone charging pad

Will the BYD Sealion 05 come to Malaysia?

BYD is yet to announce the Sealion 05 rollout strategy for the overseas markets. However, considering the growing demand for BYD electric SUVs in Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, there is a strong possibility that the automaker could introduce it to expand its lineup.
