BYD Sealion 7: Variants explained

KUALA LUMPUR: BYD electric cars are gaining popularity in Malaysia, with the Atto 3 and Seal topping the EV sales charts. Riding on this wave, the Chinese automaker recently brought a new EV to the Malaysia shores, the BYD Sealion 7.

The Sealion 7 is an electric performance SUV with premium styling and cutting-edge technology. It is built on the brand’s e-Platform 3.0 Evo, integrating a Blade battery pack, an 8-in-1 powertrain, cell-to-body technology, and an 800-volt electrical architecture. The EV has an ultra-low drag efficiency of 0.28 cd.

Just like the Seal, the Sealion 7 is offered in two variants in the local market - Premium and Performance, priced at RM 183,800 and RM 199,800, respectively. In today’s article, we will be discussing these variants in detail and exploring what sets them apart.

Both variants measure 4,830 mm in length, 1,925 mm in width, and 1,620 mm in height, and have a wheelbase of 2,930 mm. However, they are different in weight due to the different motor setups.

The above table clearly indicates that the two Sealion 7 variants are different in terms of drivetrain configuration. The Premium trim is powered by a single rear-wheel drive electric motor while the Performance trim equips a dual motor setup. 

The Performance variant offers more power and completes the century sprint 2.2 seconds quicker. However, when it comes to the battery pack, both variants use the same unit, resulting in a slightly reduced range for the Performance version due to its higher energy consumption.

Which BYD Sealion 7 variant should you choose?

The choice depends on your priorities and budget. If you are seeking a more budget-friendly EV with a better range, you can go for the Premium variant. However, if you prefer superior performance, all-wheel-drive stability, and faster acceleration, the Performance variant is worth the extra cost.
