Proton e.MAS 7 remains Malaysia’s No.1 EV; local assembly to begin soon

KUALA LUMPUR: Just like the previous seven months, the Proton e.MAS 7 has remained Malaysia’s No. 1 electric vehicle for the eighth consecutive month in August. The automaker has sold over 5,811 units of the EV between 1 January and 31 August, of which 5,455 units were delivered to Malaysians and 356 units exported to four global markets.

Co-developed with Geely, this first national EV has been winning the hearts of Malaysians since its launch in December 2024. According to the latest JPJ registration data, the EV continues to lead the segment into the second half of 2025. Out of the total 5,455 EVs sold so far this year, the e.MAS 7 holds a 24% market share, which means nearly one in every four EVs sold is a Proton EV.

This was reflected in the recent launch of new Proton e.MAS 7 variants in early July, which introduced over-the-air updates along with new exterior colours and interior choices.

Locally-assembled Proton e.MAS 7 to roll out soon

Notably, the e.MAS 7 has so far been offered as a CBU unit from China to meet strong early demand. However, with the recent opening of its new state-of-the-art PROTON EV Plant in Tanjong Malim, the automaker will soon start rolling out the locally assembled e.MAS 7, making it the first locally assembled EV from Proton. 

The EV facility is located within the Automotive High Technology Valley (AHTV), has an initial annual capacity of 20,000 vehicles, with the ability to scale up to 45,000 as demand grows. 

The local assembly will improve accessibility, create new skilled jobs, and enable greater participation of local vendors in the supply chain and ultimately help in strengthening Pro-Net’s role in developing Malaysia’s EV ecosystem.

Proton e.MAS 5 launching soon 

Furthermore, Proton is set to grab an even bigger chunk of the local EV market with the impending launch of the e.MAS 5 compact EV. It is the brand’s second all-electric model, previewed just last month. Likely to be priced below RM 100,000, the Proton e.MAS 5 will be offered in two variants - Prime and Premium, offering WLTP-claimed driving range of up to 225 km and 325 km, respectively.
