Top 7 EVs coming to Malaysia in 2024

The Malaysian automotive industry took a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable mode of transportation by welcoming several electric cars last year. Looking ahead to 2024, a fresh lineup of EVs is set to grace the local roads, further supporting the country's mission of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050. Let's take a quick look at all the top upcoming EVs in Malaysia in 2024 -

BYD Seal

BYD’s four-door coupe-styled sedan, the Seal, is ready to land on Malaysian shores next year. The EV underpins the brand’s 3.0 e-platform and 800V electrical architecture. It is likely to come in three variants - Dynamic RWD, Premium RWD, and AWD Performance. The Dynamic RWD features a single electric motor, delivering a maximum power of 204 PS and a peak torque of 310 Nm. It is powered by a 61.4 kWh LFP Blade battery, offering an impressive range of up to 460 km.

On the other hand, the Premium RWD boasts a more powerful rear-mounted motor with 313 PS/360 Nm and a larger 82.5 kWh LFP battery, providing an extended range of 570 km on a single charge. The top-spec AWD Performance model utilizes a dual-motor setup tuned for 530 PS and 670 Nm. It shares the same 82.5 kWh battery as the mid-spec trim, but due to the increased performance, the range is slightly reduced to 520 km.

Chery Omoda E5

The all-electric version of the Omoda 5, the Omoda E5 EV, has recently been previewed in the local market, expected to hit the local roads next year. The EV runs on a front-mounted electric motor, which delivers 204 PS of maximum power. Feeding the motor is a 61 kWh blade LFP battery pack, which offers a WLTP-claimed driving range of 430 km on a single charge. Design-wise, it looks much identical to its gas-powered model with a few EV-specific tweaks. In terms of features, it will have the “ADAS 2.5” advanced driver assistance kit, which is a step above the non-electric counterpart.

Volvo EX90

The EX90 is Volvo’s latest flagship three-row EV that is set to make its way to Malaysia by the fourth quarter of 2024. Touted as the safest Volvo car ever, the EV is available in two dual-motor, all-wheel-drive drivetrain options in the international markets.

The first is the Twin Motor model, which generates a maximum power of 408 PS and a peak torque of 770 Nm, while the other is the Twin Motor Performance, tuned to make 517 PS and 910 Nm. Both trims come mated to a 111 kWh lithium-ion battery pack offering an estimated travel of 600 km for the Twin Motor and 590 km for the Twin Motor Performance.

Toyota bZ4X

Earlier this year, UMW Toyota showcased the sample units of the bZ4x EV, earmarked to launch soon in the country. The upcoming Toyota EV is based on the e-TNGA platform, which also underpins the Subaru Solterra and Lexus RZ pure EVs. Speaking of the drivetrain, the sample units were equipped with a front-wheel drive electric motor good for making 204 PS of maximum power and 266 Nm of peak torque. The motor is hooked to a 71.4-kWh lithium-ion battery, which lets the EV cruise up to 500 km (on the WLTP cycle) on a single charge.

GWM Ora Lighting Cat

Great Wall Motors is also expected to bring a new electric compact sedan, the Ora Lighting Cat to Malaysia this year. It is offered in two variants globally - Long Range and Performance. The former is powered by a front-mounted single-motor setup that cranks out 204 PS of power and 340 Nm of peak torque while the latter comes equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup, which is good for making 408 PS and 680 Nm. Both are paired with an 83.5 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery, offering a range of 640 km for the Long Range and 550 km for the Performance trim.

Volkswagen ID.4

During the Volkswagen Fest 2022, Volkswagen Passengers Car Malaysia showcased the ID.4 which is likely to make its Malaysian debut next year. The electric SUV is equipped with a 204 PS electric motor and a 77-kWh lithium-ion battery offering a WLTP-claimed range of up to 519 km. The drive is sent to the rear wheels enabling the EV to run from 0 to 100 kmph in just 8.5 seconds and clock a top speed of 160 kmph. The ID.4 is based on the Modular Electric Drive Matrix platform and has a drag coefficient of 0.28.

Nissan Ariya

Edaran Tan Chong Motor is also likely to introduce the Nissan Ariya EV SUV in Malaysia in 2024. The Ariya was spotted while testing on local roads a few months back. It comes in two drivetrain setups - FWD single motor and AWD dual-motor mated to a 66 kWh and 91 kWh battery pack, respectively. The single motor produces 215 hp of power and 300 Nm of torque and runs for 450 km on a single charge. The dual motor setup, on the other hand, makes 335 hp and 560 Nm in terms of output with a driving range of 430 km.

That's a wrap for now. Stay tuned with us for more updates on these soon-to-arrive electric cars.
