2019 Proton Saga - First impression
Change is the only constant and the latest model to undergo an impressive makeover is Proton’s popular sedan, Saga. The model has received updates with tweaks visible on the outside, some new tech added to its feature list and a brand new 4-speed automatic gearbox. The new 2019 Proton Saga range is spread across three grades, namely-Saga 1.3 Standard (MT), Saga 1.3 Standard (AT) and the fully-packed, 1.3 Premium which sits at the top of the range.
Even though the sedan has received tweaks, the prices have been pegged competitively, which makes it a lucrative offering in the segment. The Proton Saga price range starts from RM 32,800 for the base manual trim, while its automatic version is slightly pricier at RM 35, 800 and the top-spec Saga 1.3 Premium is priced at RM 39,800 (all OTR prices without insurance). Out in the arena, we bring you the first impressions of the recently facelifted 2019 Proton Saga and throw light on the evolved model.
Exterior
Visually, the 2019 Proton Saga sports a bunch of restyled elements and some fresh bits that lend it a refreshed look, while retaining its essence. It borrows some of the cues from Iriz and Persona, with prominent changes made to the face, flanks and rear. The bumper in front sports a new design and gets LED-equipped daytime running lights that are reserved just for the Premium variant. Also, the grille features Infinite Weave finish which uplifts the styling in front.
Moving to the sides, the 185/55 profile rubber tyres are wrapped with 15-inch five twin-spoke alloy wheels. The lower variants, on the other hand, make do with the 14-inches. In line with the front and side facets, the rear end also receives changes for an enhanced appearance, featuring PROTON inscription on the boot, a new bumper and an integrated spoiler atop. The Proton Saga range is available in five exterior colour schemes including the Armour Silver, Snow White, Rosewood Maroon, Ruby Red and Jet Grey.
Interior
Step inside the cabin of 2019 Proton Saga to be impressed with the clever changes made to the cabin, that up to the ante for the already popular sedan. The seats inside are now wrapped with new fabric upholstery and the centre console also receives a revamp. Also, it gets sun visors with ticket holders, remote trunk release and the instrument cluster has also been restyled and it comes with an LCD multi-info display. While the above-mentioned features are standard, a new headliner with foldable assist grip has been added to the Standard (AT) and the range-topping Premium grades.
A 7-inch floating touchscreen infotainment unit is layered in the Premium variant, missing out on the rest of base MT and AT grades. The infotainment system supports smartphone connectivity tech and it gets two additional speakers over the Standard version which comes with just two speakers. In addition, it also packs steering mounted controls, two USB charging ports and reverse camera. Some of the new-age tech, such as GKUI voice command or online connectivity have been given a miss.
Engine
The 2019 Proton Saga specs show a 1.3-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder VVT engine under the bonnet which pushes out 95 hp of maximum power at 5,750 rpm against 120 Nm torque at 4,000 rpm. This unit is conjunct to a 5-speed manual gearbox and can be availed with an automatic transmission as well. The Puch-sourced CVT unit has been dropped from the carline, instead, it gets a 4-speed torque converter sourced from Hyundai. Saga’s new 4-speed torque converter also features a new layout P-R-N-D-S in place of the P-R-N-D-3-2 layout from the pre-facelift iteration. While the standard variant is available with both manual and automatic gearboxes, the top-of-the-line Premium trim is available with an automatic unit only.
Safety suite on the sedan comprises of dual airbags, the anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist. Additionally, there are parking sensors at the rear and ISOFIX mounting points. Some of the active safety features such as electronic stability control, front parking sensors and hill hold assist are specific to the top-spec Premium grade. Proton is also offering a standard 5-Years/150,000 km warranty along with 3 times free labour service.
