2019 Toyota Corolla officially hit sales in Japan in three body styles

KUALA LUMPUR: Corolla is a trendy offering from the Japanese multination automobile manufacture, Toyota and the 12th generation of the car has officially hit the markets. It will be offered in three distinct body styles, just like the way it did in Europe. The three different body style includes Corolla (sedan variant), Corolla Touring (it was earlier known as the Corolla Fielder and Corolla Axio), and the Corolla Sport (hatchback variant).

Both the Corolla and Corolla Touring variants come with the identical front end in its native home market as the Levin, which is sold in China, whereas the Corolla Sport looks indistinguishable to hatchback trims of the C-segment variant that can be discovered in the United States and Europe. In addition to that, the Corolla models that are traded in Japan flaunts a sleek “C” badge at the nose instead of a conventional Toyota badge. However, you will still be able to locate the mark of the Japanese manufacturer at the rear end and on the wheel caps as well.

Under the hood, the base variant gets a 2ZR-FAE 1.8-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, generating 140 PS of maximum power and 170 Nm of the peak torque. It comes mated to a Super CVT-i gearbox with seven virtual speeds. The powertrain mentioned above is equipped in Corolla and Corolla Touring only.

The next powertrain is the 8NR-FTS 1.2-litre turbocharged motor that puts out 116 PS of maximum power and 185 Nm of peak torque. Every model can get this mill with a manual transmission and front-wheel drive. However, only the Corolla Sport comes with CVT in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants. The last one is a hybrid powertrain that comprises of Atkison-cycle 2ZR-FXE 1.8-litre four-cylinder motor and an electric motor with 6.5 Ah nickel-metal hydride battery.
