2022 Mazda CX-60: What do we know so far

2022 Mazda CX-60: What do we know so far

It was in October 2021 that Mazda announced its plan to significantly expand its SUV line-up, in a period of over two years from 2022 to 2023. On its list were five models, including the CX-50, the CX-60, the CX-70, the CX-80, and the CX-90. Starting in the ascending order, the automaker first teased and then revealed the CX-50 in November. And shortly after, moving forward in the order, it started teasing the CX-60. With the last teaser coming out just a few days back, we are now eagerly waiting for its debut that is scheduled for 8th March 2022.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Is the new Mazda CX-60 a spacious car?

    The CX-60 is a two-row, five-seater, mid-size SUV.
  • Will the CX-60 offered as a PHEV model?

Nothing is confirmed at this front at the moment, rumours suggest that the CX-60’s range-topping trim will be a PHEV model, packing a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre 4-cyl mill and an e-motor for a maximum combined power output of over 300 hp.
  • Now, just a few hours before the CX-60’s official launch, the internet got bombarded with the SUV’s high-definition images, courtesy to several Instagram accounts including Wilcoblok.

So, what do these CX-60 HD images reveal about the upcoming Mazda SUV, let’s find out.

    Mazda CX-60 architecture

Part of Mazda’s SUV lineup expansion program, the CX-60 underpins the automaker’s new rear- and all-wheel-drive platform.

It is designed as a two-row, five-seater, mid-size SUV for markets with narrow lanes and smaller parking lots, like Japan and Europe.

    Mazda CX-60 design

    Mazda CX-60 design language

The latest CX-60 images reveal that the SUV does not deviate much from the automaker’s much liked and appreciated Kodo design language. At some angles it very much resembles the all-new CX-5 facelift.

With the CX-60, Mazda has followed the ‘less is more’ principle along with the Japanese concept of Ma, which refers to the ‘calm and dignified beauty of empty space’.

However, it is pretty much evident that the SUV gained a bolder design perspective, particularly around the fenders alongside the new unique LED headlights with distinct LED DRLs, and flatter nose.

Compared to the SUV’s currently available in the market, the CX-60 showcases an exceptionally long bonnet. Well, it is designed in such a way for a reason, that is to fit a longitudinal-oriented engine for the car’s rear- and all-wheel drive set-up.

Some other notable styling clues are - small dual-tiered headlights, massive grille, fake fender vents, an upswept window line, large two-tone alloy wheels, body-coloured body mouldings, and L-shaped tail light graphics.

Also, Mazda has specially developed a delicately reflective white paint for the SUV.

The CX-60’s cabin looks ‘Mazda-like’. It comes wrapped in plush material choices, like Maple wood, chrome trim, Nappa leather, and Japanese fabric, like one would expect from a Mazda car. One can also see the use of Musubu, which is a unique “Japanese way of binding textiles”.

The leaked images reveal the CX-60 will benefit from a fully digital instrument cluster, thus becoming the first Mazda to come equipped with the feature. It also gets a massive infotainment display sitting atop the dashboard and slightly tilted towards the driver.

    Mazda CX-60 powerplant

While nothing is confirmed at this front at the moment, rumours suggest that the CX-60’s range-topping trim will be a PHEV model, packing a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre 4-cyl mill and an e-motor for a maximum combined power output of over 300 hp.

At the time of launch, other CX-60 variants are expected to feature Mazda’s SkyActiv-X inline-six petrol and SkyACtiv-D inline-six diesel engines, both paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system.
