BMW X5 is now bullet and bomb-proof

KUALA LUMPUR: BMW has introduced the bullet-proof X5 trim called the X5 Protection VR6. The SUV is bomb-proof as well, thanks to the additional armouring fitted in the car. If you are in doubt with the claim, the German automaker is providing certification for it as an Explosive Resistant Vehicle (ERV) and Bullet Resistant Vehicle (BRV).

So, how BMW made the X5 both bullet and bomb-proof?

  • The carmaker integrated various body panels of the X5 with more high-strength steel
  • Thick steel plates can be found on the side frame, doors, front firewall, and roof - all will combat debris and bullet penetration
  • The undercarriage now gets beefed up protection with the aluminium underbody splinter shield, armoured boot compartment partition, and security glazing
  • The glass is now 33 mm thick than before and now comes with an internal polycarbonate layer that prevents shards from coming inside the cabin

  • Sensitive areas of body joints and door gaps along with transitions between body panels feature overlapping armour-plating and tightened seals, thus making sure no bullet or debris come inside
  • The wheels can withstand continuous AK-47 fire, so one doesn’t need to worry about an attack from a lesser weapon
  • The Post Blast Protection Technology makes sure that the car stays intact in case of a secondary explosion

As for the bomb-proof capabilities of the car, the BMW X5 can tolerate a blast equivalent to 15 kg of TNT placed only 4 meters away. The car’s undercarriage can hold off a blast from about 200 grams of G4 or anti-infantry grenade.

Powering the BMW X5 Protection VR6 is a 4.4-litre, twin-turbo V8 powerplant, it is the same mill found under the X5 M50i. This mill churns out 530 PS of maximum power and 750 Nm of peak torque. Despite the added weight, the Protection V6 trim displays the same performance figures as the standard model, i.e., a 0 to 100 kmph sprint of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 210 kmph.
