BYD Malaysia teases upcoming EV with cryptic clues

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s No. 1 BEV brand, BYD, dropped a cryptic teaser on its social media handle earlier this month, which prominently features the number “6”. After generating buzz with the initial teaser, the automaker has now shared a new clue to spark enthusiasts’ curiosity.

This time, BYD revealed the striking rear light signature of a car, which appears to be a compact sedan. The latest shot clears the air that the upcoming EV is not the Sealion 6 DM-i PHEV or the Shark 6, but then what exactly is that? 

The tail light featured in the teaser appears very similar to that of the BYD Qin L EV, unveiled in China earlier this year. The Qin L EV is a new all-electric midsize sedan that competes directly with models like the Tesla Model 3.

So, does this mean the Qin L EV will be coming to Malaysia under a different name featuring the number ‘6’? There’s no official confirmation yet. For now, let’s take a closer look at the Qin L EV.

BYD Qin L EV: Key highlights 

• BYD’s Qin L EV sedan belongs to the automaker’s Dynasty series and targets the young consumer groups. 
• It is built on the automaker’s e-Platform 3.0 Evo, featuring an 800V high-voltage system and a rear-wheel-drive motor, producing a maximum power of 215 hp and a peak torque of 330 Nm.
• Two battery options are - 46.08 kWh LFP Blade and 56.64 kWh LFP Blade, offering a driving range of 470 km and 545 km, respectively.
• The EV underpins BYD’s new Loong (dragon) Face design and looks sleeker and futuristic. 
• It measures 4720 mm in length, 1880 mm in width, 1495 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2820 mm.
• Inside, the EV is equipped with BYD’s DiLink 100 smart cockpit system, which is integrated with DeepSeek’s model for AI assistance interactions.

• Key features include - a 15.6-inch floating central control screen, an 8.8-inch full LCD instrument panel, a 12-inch W-HUD, an integrated heating and cooling refrigerator, and 50W wireless charging.
• As for advanced-driving assistance, it comes with BYD’s “God’s Eye” C three-camera solution and provides high-speed navigation on autopilot, intelligent parking, automatic emergency braking, and blind spot monitoring.

Priced between CNY 119,800 (RM 71,028) and CNY 139,800 (RM 82,886), the Qin L EV grabbed over 10,000 orders in the first week of release in China, which indicates its strong market demand. 

Well, is the BYD Qin L EV actually coming to Malaysia? Only time will tell.
