In the company’s words, the WEY G9 is “the first premium Chinese New Energy MPV to be assembled in Malaysia”, and the move is clearly aimed at more than just putting a “Made in Malaysia” badge on the car.
GWM is positioning local assembly as a longer-term play, with localisation, vendor development and regional supply chain groundwork all being part of the pitch, as it looks to build Malaysia into a strategic base for ASEAN.
The WEY G9 is set for an official Malaysian launch next week. Ahead of that, bookings are now open nationwide through authorised GWM dealers, with an expected price below RM300,000.
Photo from GWMThe start of CKD operations at EPMB is being framed as a signal of confidence in Malaysia’s ability to handle higher-value assembly, technology transfer, and the kind of production standards required for a premium product.
Beyond the factory gates, GWM is also talking up local talent development and supplier growth, and it is already linking the project to a possible export pathway in later phases, depending on how its regional plan unfolds.
That bigger ambition was spelt out in the two official statements released during the event.
“Today is a historic achievement for GWM Malaysia. The roll out of the GWM WEY G9 from Melaka represents the meeting point of global engineering excellence and local craftsmanship. It reinforces our commitment to Malaysia, from creating high value jobs to developing local suppliers and ensuring Malaysian customers enjoy premium New Energy vehicles assembled with pride here in Melaka. This milestone lays the foundation for a stronger and more competitive GWM Malaysia in the years ahead”, said En. Roslan Abdullah, Chief Operating Officer of GWM Malaysia.

It reflects our global ambition to deepen our New Energy presence in ASEAN and our confidence in Malaysia as a strategic manufacturing base. The partnership with EPMB is an important milestone in our regional expansion journey. This is more than local assembly, it is the beginning of a broader roadmap that will support future export opportunities. We are committed to growing our regional future from Malaysia.”
What is the WEY G9, and what’s being highlighted so far
GWM is keeping the messaging focused on positioning rather than deep specs at this stage.
Photo by Adam AubreyThe company says the WEY G9 is developed through its global R&D network and built on a dedicated luxury New Energy platform, with the Melaka CKD programme meant to deliver international engineering standards alongside local quality assurance.
Feature-wise, the headline for Malaysia is the introduction of the brand’s Hybrid Intelligent 4WD (Hi4) system into the premium MPV space. GWM is pitching the WEY G9 as a dual-purpose MPV, aimed at both family and business users, with the usual premium-MPV checklist being emphasised, comfort, safety tech, smooth performance, and a more “upmarket” cabin experience.
For buyers, the immediate takeaway is that the GWM WEY G9 is now open for booking across Malaysia, with GWM guiding for a price below RM300,000.
Photo by Adam AubreyThe company hasn’t locked in a final figure here, but the pricing hint is clearly meant to stake out where the WEY G9 wants to sit in the Malaysian premium MPV conversation.
The rollout is just the start, with further work planned around deeper localisation, ongoing talent development and continued technical capability upgrades at the Melaka plant.
The company also reiterates that this CKD programme is tied to its wider ASEAN strategy, and that further updates on CKD progress and its regional roadmap will come later, closer to launch.
