New Kia Sorento arriving this year in the US, plug-in hybrid version later in 2021

KUALA LUMPUR: The new Kia Sorento is at the heart of the brand’s revitalized global SUV lineup, comprising the Stonic, Seltos, Telluride, and Sportage. Unveiled at Frankfurt, the fourth generation of midsize SUV will also come in a hybrid option for the first time. Sorento is also the brand’s first vehicle based on its new-generation midsize SUV platform, representing a compact engine bay structure, shorter front and rear overhangs, longer wheelbase resulting in more generous cabin space.

While the 2021 Kia Sorento is set to hit the US market later in 2020, the automaker has confirmed that the Plug-In Hybrid Sorento will join the lineup sometime in 2021, it will be most likely a 2022 model. Kia has released the specifications for both.

Powering the base Sorento is a 2.5-litre four-pot engine producing 191 horsepower and 245 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The engine will have a 27 mpg combined rating, as per the automaker. Next in the engine lineup is a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-pot mill with 281 hp and 421 Nm that’s mated to an 8-speed DCT. It would have a combined rating of 25 mpg.

Coming to the greener engine options, the first is a 1.6-litre turbo-hybrid system that can churn out 227 hp. Next is the debutant plug-hybrid system, bundling a 1.6-litre engine, a 6-speed automatic transmission, a 67 kW electric motor, and a 13.9 kWh battery pack. The set up will churn out a combined output of 261 hp and offer 30 miles of EPA-rated all-electric range. Kia claims that the hybrid Sorento will have a 39 mpg fuel economy in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. However, the numbers for the plug-in version are not yet released.

Of course, the upcoming Sorento is more than just a number of new powertrain choices. It is stuffed with several new tech and assistance features such as a 12.3-inch digital cluster, a 10.25-inch touch screen infotainment system, UVO link system, remote engine start, highway driving assist, etc.

Pricing for the 2021 Kia Sorento is yet to be announced, but the market expects a figure of around $28,000 (RM 116,666). The ongoing Sorento in Malaysia is priced at RM 169,888.
