New smart #5 BRABUS Laser Red Edition lands in Malaysia at RM259,800

KUALA LUMPUR: smart Malaysia has put a new colour on its flagship electric SUV, the smart #5 BRABUS Laser Red Edition. It's a limited-run version, and the change is exactly what it sounds like: the paint.

Nothing mechanical is different from the standard #5 BRABUS, so what you're paying for here is the look and the exclusivity, not extra performance.

The Laser Red finish is a louder take on the car's already chunky, performance-flavoured styling. It plays up the rugged body and the BRABUS detailing rather than softening any of it. If the point of buying a BRABUS is being seen, this is the version that leans hardest into that.

Same car underneath

Mechanically, the Laser Red Edition is the #5 BRABUS you already know. Dual-motor all-wheel drive, 475 kW (646 PS) and 710 Nm, and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds. Top speed is 210 km/h. That comes from the 100 kWh battery on an 800V architecture, good for a WLTP range of 540 km and 10 to 80 percent DC charging in around 15 minutes.

The rest of the BRABUS kit carries over too: the dedicated BRABUS drive mode, a cabin trimmed in Alcantara and Dinamica, the BRABUS exterior styling, the AMD V2000-powered infotainment setup, and the usual suite of driver assistance systems.

At RM259,800, the #5 BRABUS sits at the pricier end of the performance EV SUV bracket in Malaysia. For context, Malaysian buyers cross-shopping this segment will also be looking at the Tesla Model Y Performance, BYD Sealion 7 Performance, Xpeng G6 and the Zeekr 7X, the last of which shares its underpinnings with the #5.
