New Toyota Corolla gets a sportier version in Europe, the GR Sport

KUALA LUMPUR: Toyota Europe has unveiled a sportier variant of the new Corolla. Called the GR Sport, it’s the company’s response to the sporty-looking crossovers being launched nowadays without any performance upgrades, e.g. Hyundai i30 N-Line or Ford Focus ST-Line. Notably, Toyota had introduced a similar version of Yaris last year and named it the Yaris GR Sport. The Toyota Corolla GR Sport will go on sale in early 2020.

Toyota has done some exceptional work on the car to give it a sportier exterior. The front is dominated by a grille covering the engine exhaust with a beautiful dark chrome finish. Also, included in the list are a rear diffuser and unique lower skirt. It runs on 18-inch alloy wheels designed beautifully in synchronisation with the grey-colored body. The metallic grille at the front adds to the aggressive look of the car.

The Corolla GR Sport also has gorgeous interior consisting of sports seats with leather-like side bolsters and an option to replace the same with full leather material. One can also find eye-catching red aesthetics on the steering wheel and gear shifter that produce decent contrast with the all black interior. The wood-look decorative cabin trims and 7.0-inch display for information make this entry-level sports car a great package.

The car will go on sale in two body-style variants namely hatchback and touring sports, with an option to choose between 1.8- or 2.0-litre hybrid powertrains. The 1.8-litre unit offers 142 Nm of torque and 122 PS of power, while the 2.0-litre provides 190 Nm and 180 PS.

Toyota will also launch an interesting variant in collaboration with Trek Bicycle named Corolla TREK for people who love an active lifestyle. Sales will begin in August 2019.
