This highly anticipated EV combines affordability with practicality and promises to make sustainable mobility accessible for everyone. So, does that mean it will be the next game-changing EV in Malaysia? Let’s know what it brings to the table.
A rear-wheel drive setup with a promising driving range
Based on a Geely model, the upcoming Proton e.MAS 5 sets itself apart from many other compact EVs with a rear-wheel drive motor. The RWD setup promises a balanced and engaging riding experience, providing a hint of sportiness not usually found in affordable EVs.
In terms of output, the drivetrain comes in two different states of tune, the lower-spec version delivers a maximum power of 79 PS and a peak torque of 130 Nm, whereas the higher version is good for making 116 PS and 150 Nm. As for acceleration, Proton quoted a 0-50 kmph time of 3.9 seconds, which should be quick enough to give us that EV-style thrust when overtaking in the city or pulling out into traffic.
Decent range
The Proton EV will come equipped with CATL-sourced LFP battery packs, rather than the Geely Aegis ‘short blade’ batteries found on the e.MAS 7. These include - 30.12 kWh and 40.16 kWh units, offering a WLTP-claimed driving range of 250 km (310 km on the CLTC) and 325 km (410 km on the CLTC), respectively.
While the range figures do not match premium EVs, in the under RM 100k price segment, this is quite competitive and practical. For comparison, the recently launched BYD Atto 2, priced at RM 100,000, offers a range of 410 km (on the NEDC cycle), which is approximately equal to 328 km WLTP. It can comfortably cover daily commutes, errands, and even intercity drives without frequent charging in most urban and suburban areas.
Big on space
The e.MAS 5 is positioned as an entry-level electric car in the B-segment category. Despite being a compact B-segment hatchback, Proton claims that it offers the spaciousness of a C-segment car, ensuring that families, friends, and passengers enjoy a comfortable ride. It promises a true five-seater practicality with its generous cabin layout and a flat rear floor.
The boot space is measured at 375 litres, expandable up to 1,320 litres with the rear seats folded. The EV incorporates 32 cleverly designed storage compartments and a best-in-class 70-litre frunk.
Advanced technology
The interior features a 14.6-inch high-definition touchscreen (same as the new Proton X50), powered by a dual-language Atlas operating system (English and Bahasa Malaysia. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wired/wireless), integrated live charging map and a unified payment system via the e.MAS mobile app.
Offering a safe and smart driving experience is a long list of advanced driver assistance systems, including -
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- Autonomous Emergency Braking
- Lane Departure Warning
- Traffic Sign Recognition
- Blind Spot Detection
- Rear Cross Traffic Alert
- Rear Collision Warning
- Door Opening Warning
- Front Vehicle Departure Alert
These features enhance peace of mind for both driver and passengers, making the EV a dependable choice for everyday journeys.
Designed and tuned for Malaysia
The Proton e.MAS 5 is designed for the people, built for the nation, and driving Malaysians forward into an electrified future. While it is based on a Geely model, Proton says this isn’t just a straight copy-paste job. Instead, the chassis of the EV has been structurally reinforced to meet stricter safety targets and adapted for right-hand drive.
The national automaker has also worked on the suspension setup to make it specifically tuned for Malaysian roads. To make the EV the right fit for the Malaysian climate, the vehicle’s body structure has undergone rigorous weather testing.
Tailored for urban living, the EV can easily navigate narrow city streets, merge smoothly into traffic, and still remain robust enough to deliver a comfortable ride on Malaysia’s rougher roads.
Affordable EV, Big impact?
While the Proton e.MAS 5's official price is yet to be announced, speculators suggest that the EV could be offered at under RM 100,000, making it one of the most affordable EVs in Malaysia with this level of performance and technology.
If this holds true, the e.MAS 5 could very well become Malaysia’s next game-changing electric vehicle. What do you think?
