The EV not only has an affordable sticker price, but also has low charging costs, low maintenance, and a low booking fee from RM 99. Proton claims that one charge can cost you as little as your daily cup of coffee, and the monthly maintenance cost is as affordable as a pickleball game with your friends.

    Designed and tuned for Malaysia

While it is based on a Geely model, the Proton e.MAS 5 has been designed and tuned for Malaysia; it has been structurally reinforced to meet stricter safety targets and adapted for right-hand drive.

RWD drivetrain with a promising driving range

The e.MAS 5 is the first EV in its segment to feature a rear-wheel drive motor. The RWD setup promises a balanced and engaging riding experience, and adds a dash of sportiness not usually found in affordable EVs.

The base-spec Prime delivers a maximum power of 79 PS and a peak torque of 130 Nm, whereas the Premium trim is good for making 116 PS and 150 Nm. In terms of performance, the EV runs from 0 to 50 kmph in 3.9 seconds.

The new Proton EV comes equipped with CATL-sourced LFP battery packs, rather than the  Geely Aegis ‘short blade’ batteries found on the e.MAS 7. These include - 30.12 kWh and 40.16 kWh units, offering a WLTP-claimed driving range of 225 and 325 km, respectively.

    Supports quick charging

Both variants of the EV support up to 6.6 kW AC charging, while DC fast charging goes up to 53 kW (or up to 71 kW on the higher-spec model). It can recharge 30% to 80% battery in just 21 minutes.

While being a compact B-segment hatchback, the Proton e.MAS 5 is big on space. Proton claims that it offers true five-seater practicality with its generous cabin layout and a flat rear floor.

Figuratively, the EV measures 4,135 mm in length, 1,805 mm in width, 1,580 mm in height and spans a wheelbase of 2,650 mm. The boot space is estimated at 375 litres, expandable up to 1,320 litres with the rear seats folded. A best-in-class 70-litre frunk is also available.
