Toyota Hilux - The ultimate off-roader
Toyota Hilux is a popular name in the pickup segment. It looks premium, unlike most of the mainstream models with mundane looks, and packs an array of comfort, connectivity, and safety features, available with the new breed of passenger vehicles. The eight-generation model was introduced in 2015, and a facelift ensued two years later in 2017.
In October 2019, Toyota introduced a new variant to the Hilux line-up, christened 2.8 Black Edition. The new variant is an improvement over the previous grade with better equipment, and some notable styling tweaks. Currently, it is available in six variants in manual and automatic transmissions with a 2.4-litre unit in single cab and double cab versions. The 4x4 drive system is standard across the line-up, which hints at its off-roading capabilities. There is a high capacity 2.8-litre unit which powers the Black Edition. Despite being a commercial vehicle, the Toyota Hilux is a tough competition to the mainstay SUVs. As for Toyota Hilux price details, the range starts from RM 90,000 and goes up to RM 139,888. While there is a lot that makes Hilux a favourite in the segment, here is a look at what makes it an ultimate off-roader.
Aggressive looks
A prominent off-roader, the pick-up looks every inch a head-turner. The face looks aggressive, courtesy the prominent chrome grille that meets with the LED projector headlamps. Adding a touch of sportiness to the pick-up is the unique lower bumper that highlights the front. Skid plates, roof rails, etc. are some key elements that further enhance the outer appeal.
Boastful dimensions & high ground clearance
The full-size Hilux pick-up boasts large proportions. It measures 5,330 mm in length, 1,540 mm in width, and 1,815 mm in height. The ground clearance is excellent at 286 mm, which makes it a perfect off-roader, tailored to tackle all kinds of surface.
Chunky alloy wheels
Only the Black edition models come with the meaty 18-inch dual-tone, machine-finished alloy wheels, while the regular variants sport the 17-inch units. The large alloys aide better grip on the road while on the move. Moreover, it goes well with Hilux’s sturdy stance that lends a commanding road presence to the pick-up.
Spacious Cabin
The Toyota Hilux cabin is stretched across a 3,085 mm long wheelbase, implying a huge space for occupants at both ends. This also indicates comfortable shoulder-space, head-room and knee-space for the passengers, especially those seated at the back. While it has generous cabin space, the pick-up has a large boot with enough space for storing luggage.
All-black interior
Another highlight on the inside is the all-black colour scheme, which ups the premium quotient inside. The all-black perforated combination leather upholstery is available with select variants only. Rest of the grades in the line-up make do with the fabric seat covers (black). Whether leather or fabric, the all-black interior colour theme looks upmarket and adds to the overall aesthetics on the inside.
Feature-packed
The premium interior packs a long list of equipment including 4.2-inch TFT colour display, a large capacitive touchscreen unit with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Wi-Fi recognition, USB, Bluetooth and reverse camera. In addition to the above features, it also comes with an automatic air conditioner with rear vents, cruise control, USB charging points for electronic devices, digital video recorder, smart entry & smart system, power windows, etc.
Powerful engines
The Toyota Hilux specs-sheet comprises two engines including the 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder, in-line DOHC motor and a 2.8-litre unit. The four-cylinder DOHC engine makes 150 PS at 3,400 rpm along with 400 Nm torque between 1,600 to 2,000 rpm. While the larger capacity engine puts out a maximum power of 177 PS at 3,400 rpm with 450 Nm torque between 1,600 to 2,000 rpm. Both engines get a choice of six-speed manual and six-speed automatic unit with super ECT & sequential shifter. A part-time 4WD with automatic disconnecting differential and rear differential lock are standard on the entire line-up.
Comprehensive safety kit
The safety kit on the Hilux contains a host of advanced safety tech such as seven airbags (with AT variants), anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, vehicle stability control, Downhill-assist control, active traction control, optional blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, reverse sensor, ISOFIX mounts and 3-point seat belts at both ends. Most of these features come only with the 2.8L edition variant.
5-Star ASEAN NCAP rating
The pick-up secured an impressive 5-star rating in the ASEAN NCAP crash test for the adult occupant protection. This indicates the pick-up is shielded well with multiple protective layers.
Boastful dimensions, spacious cabin, comprehensive feature list, copious safety kit, high ground clearance and a standard 4WD drivetrain make Hilux an ultimate off-roader and a top tier pick-up that gives some passenger vehicles a run for their money.
