Proton e.MAS 5: Why it’s winning over Malaysian buyers

Capitalising on the popularity of the e.MAS 7, Proton introduced its second electric vehicle, the e.MAS 5, in October last year. Touted as Malaysia's most affordable EV, the e.MAS 5 became an instant hit among buyers, securing 1,607 bookings within 24 hours and 3,000 within the first week.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the price of the Proton e.MAS 5?

The Proton e.MAS 5 price ranges between RM 59,800 and RM 72,800.
  • What makes the Proton e.MAS 5 stand out?

The Proton e.MAS is big on space and comes with the segment-first rear-wheel drive motor setup and a wide range of advanced technologies, redefining everyday mobility.
  • If we look at the sales numbers, a total of 3,068 units of the e.MAS 5 were sold in January 2026, marking the highest monthly deliveries of a model that Pro-Net has ever made. This milestone not only made the e.MAS 5 the No.1 EV in Malaysia, but also positioned it among the top 5 overall passenger vehicles for the month, capturing 49.2% BEV market share and 4.5% of total car sales.

So what exactly makes this Proton EV so desirable in the competitive EV landscape in Malaysia? Let’s find out.

    A value proposition that resonates

Representing Proton’s mission to bring electrification to every Malaysian household, the e.MAS 5 is priced between RM 59,800 and RM 72,800, truly earning its moniker of the country's most affordable EV.

Designed to complement the lifestyle of modern Malaysians, the EV combines style, practicality and sustainability at a sensible price, which is something consumers have long wanted. The price tag undercuts several imported rivals and bridges the affordability gap that is one of the key factors contributing to the car-buying decision in price-sensitive markets, like Malaysia.

Tailored for Malaysian roads and daily needs

Another factor that works in favour of the e.MAS 5 is its suitability for the Malaysian driving conditions, unlike other early EVs meant for urban commuting only. Although it is based on a Geely model, its chassis has been structurally reinforced to meet stricter safety targets and adapted for right-hand drive. The suspension setup is specifically tuned for Malaysian roads, striking a balance between daily city usability and highway confidence.

The compact dimensions allow it to easily navigate narrow city streets and merge smoothly into traffic, where larger EVs can feel cumbersome. The battery electric vehicle is also robust enough to deliver a comfortable ride on Malaysia’s rougher roads and an adequate electric range for most intercity rides. Thus, the e.MAS 5 is small and nimble where it needs to be and capable where it counts, which resonates with the Malaysians seeking an affordable EV.

    Big on space

While positioned as an entry-level EV in the B-segment category, the EV offers the spaciousness of a C-segment car, ensuring that families, friends, and passengers enjoy a comfortable ride. It features a true five-seater practicality with its generous cabin layout and a flat rear floor.

As for cargo, the automaker has provided a spacious boot area, measuring 375 litres, which is expandable up to 1,320 litres with the rear seats folded. Adding to that is a best-in-class 70-litre storage compartment provided at the front.

Strong feature list for this price

Another impressive thing about the Proton e.MAS 5 is its strong features list for the price. The modern and thoughtfully designed EV is well-equipped with a wide range of advanced features, making it feel more premium than expected for its segment.

The Proton e.MAS 5 features list includes -

    • LED projector headlights
    • LED tail lights
    • 14.6-inch FHD display head unit (best-in-class)
    • Integrated Live Charging Map (exclusive-in-class)
    • 8.8-inch digital instrument display
    • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
    • Voice Command in English and Malay (exclusive-in-class)
    • 28-litre underseat storage compartment (exclusive-in-class)
    • 20-litre under console storage (best-in-class)
    • 32 storage compartments (best-in-class)
    • Powered tailgate
    • Crystal gear selector (exclusive-in-class)
    • 4.95m turning radius (best-in-class)

A rear-wheel drive setup with a decent range

The e.MAS 5 comes equipped with a rear-wheel drive motor, which sets it apart from many other compact EVs. The RWD setup promises a balanced and engaging riding experience, with a dash of sportiness not usually found in affordable EVs. The electric motor churns out a maximum power of 79 PS and a peak torque of 130 Nm in its standard form and 116 PS and 150 Nm in a higher-tuned version.

Feeding the motor is a 30.12 kWh and 40.16 kWh CATL-sourced LFP battery pack, offering a WLTP-claimed driving range of 250 km and 325 km, respectively.  While these figures do not match premium EVs, for an EV priced around RM 70,000, this is quite competitive and practical.

Speaking of the charging time, the EV can quickly juice up from 30% to 80% in just 21 minutes, using a DC fast charger.

Familiarity and trust in the Proton brand

The e.MAS 5 is also backed by Proton’s legacy of catering to local consumers, which is something foreign EV brands lack. Proton is a household name in the country with decades of local presence and a solid sales and service network. While switching to a pure EV ride for the first-time, buyers often look for brand familiarity and trust, which Proton strongly delivers.

In a nutshell, the Proton e.MAS 5 addresses the real needs of Malaysian buyers who are ready to take a big leap towards sustainable mobility, with its practicality, well-rounded driving experience and affordability, making it well-suited for daily use. This formula hits all the right chords with buyers and gives the EV a competitive edge in the local EV landscape.
