The PHEV trim comes equipped with a larger rear-mounted e-motor and a dedicated lithium-ion battery pack, offering all-electric driving. It is also more powerful and has an electric AWD setup.

The MHEV, on the other hand, comes with a 48-volt mild hybrid system that houses an integrated starter generator between the engine and gearbox. It has a mechanical AWD setup and cannot use electric power alone.

    Exterior

The all-new Volvo XC90 boasts a new exterior design representing the current-gen model's first major facelift. It gets a new front air intake graphic, slimmed-down Thor’s Hammer LED headlights, sculpted hood, and updated front bumper and fenders. The SUV runs on 20-inch five-spoke glossy black diamond-cut wheels.

    Interior

The seven-seater Volvo SUV (2-2-3 layout) is kitted with a larger, free-standing 11.2-inch portrait-oriented central screen with improved pixel density. It has a new user interface shared with its electric counterpart, the EX90. This intuitive interface has a contextual bar that can learn drivers’ habits and showcase the most useful apps as per the situation.

For example, it showcases the 360-degree camera when driving at low speeds and the preferred media streaming app when the vehicle is stopped and charging.

It also enables the driver to conveniently change “Pure”, “Hybrid”, and “Performance” modes by offering “Drive Modes” options on the home screen. Notably, this feature is exclusive to the XC90 T8.

    Other key changes include -

    • Redesigned horizontal dashboard with decorative panels made from premium materials for a more textured finish
    • New vertical air vents
    • Enhanced illumination for a more luxurious feel at night
    • New interior materials
    • Additional cupholder and storage space in the centre console for more practicality
    • Relocated wireless phone charging pad for more convenience
    • Improved sound insulation with acoustic foam-filled pillars
    • New frequency-selective damping system for even less wind and road noise
    • Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system with 19 speakers

    Ride and handling

Just like the EX90, the new XC90 also equips an active chassis with air suspension on all four wheels. It offers self-leveling functionality with a constant ride height adjustment by smart chassis monitoring (500x per second) and thus gives the most comfortable ride possible.

Adding to the ride comfort is an electronically controlled damping system and automatic adjustable suspension that lowers itself by 20 mm for more aerodynamic efficiency or raises itself by 40 mm for off-road driving.
