    Price and variants

As mentioned above, the new XC90 is available in Ultimate guise only which applies to both its variants - the B5 and Recharge T8. So, no more Inscription variants on board.

    XC90 B5 Ultimate

    RM 416,888

    XC90 Recharge T8 Ultimate

    RM 432,888

Compared to the previous variants (B5 Inscription Plus and Recharge T8 Inscription Plus) there is a RM 4000 price hike.

Note the above-mentioned prices are on-the-road figures without insurance. And includes a 5-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, and an 8-year, 160,000 warranty for its PHEV battery.

    Powertrain configuration

It was back in April when Volvo Cars Malaysia announced a soon update of the Recharge T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain with enhanced outputs and electric range. All of this seems to be coming true with the Ultimate variant on board.

Powering the XC90 Recharge T8 Ultimate plug-in hybrid model is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and a rear e-motor. The former generates a maximum power of 317 PS at 6,000 rpm along with a peak torque of 400 Nm from 3,000 to 5,400 rpm.
The electric motor, on the other hand, is rated at 145 PS and 309 Nm of torque.

The all-wheel drive setup includes an 8-speed automatic transmission with Geartronic which sends the engine output to the front wheels.

As for the XC90 B5 Ultimate trim, its hood houses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine making 317 PS and 400 Nm of torque. The drive is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Also, part of the setup is a 48-volt hybrid system with an integrated starter generator (ISG), positioned between the engine and transmission.

The above-mentioned ISG offers 14 PS and 40 Nm Torque, thus bringing the total output to 263 PS at 6,000 rpm and 390 Nm from 1,800 to 4,800 rpm.

    Performance

The XC90 Recharge T8 Ultimate can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.3 seconds. The B5 Ultimate model is a bit slower with a century sprint time of 7.9 seconds. As for top speed, it is fixed at 180 kmph for both variants and most of its models, under Volvo’s safety initiative.

    Battery & charging

The Recharge T8 Ultimate model gets an 18.8 kWh battery which offers a range of 77 km, a noticeable improvement over the previous model with an 11.6 kWh battery offering 50 km of range.

A full charge with a 3.7 kW AC socket (Type 2 Connection) takes 5 hours, with a domestic socket the battery gets charged in 13 hours.

    Exterior

Both the variants of the Volvo XC90 look alike, however, the only differentiating factor is the wheels. While the B5 Ultimate variant rides on 20-inch five-spoke black diamond-cut alloys, the range-topping Recharge T8 Ultimate trim gets 20-inch five-multi-spoke black diamond cut units.

    Cabin

The new XC90 features several new features apart from getting several carry-forwards. The former includes - an Android Automotive OS-powered infotainment system with built-in Google services. Like before, the infotainment system is linked to a 1,400-watt, 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, and a 9-inch portrait touchscreen.

Part of the carry-forward kit is- four-zone climate control, powered front seats with memory function, a panoramic sunroof, a head-up display, and Active Chassis with four-corner air suspension.

    Safety

The new XC90 specs sheet is loaded with a range of standard safety features. For instance

    • Autonomous emergency braking with steering support
    • Lane Keeping Aid
    • Run-off road mitigation with road edge detection
    • Oncoming lane mitigation
    • Blind spot monitoring with steer assist
    • Cross-traffic alert with auto brake
    • Run-off road protection
    • Pilot Assist
    • Adaptive cruise control

Overall, the 2023 Volvo XC90 is a big improvement over the previous-gen model and the minor price hike justifies the additions. Let us know what you think of the new model in the comments.
