Denza Z EV concept sports car revealed with fold-away steering wheel

KUALA LUMPUR: Among the several exciting models stealing the spotlight at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show is the flashy-looking BYD Denza Z. This is a 4-seater electric concept sports car expected to take on big names like Porsche 911 and Maserati GranTurismo.

As we know, Denza is BYD’s premium sub-brand founded in 2010 that was jointly owned by BYD and Mercedes-Benz initially. The Denza lineup includes full-size MPVs and mid-size SUVs, along with a fastback car, the Z9 GT, that rivals the Porsche Taycan.

Coming back to the Denza Z, it features a cab-forward design with a low and sporty stance. While it's a two-door coupe, it can accommodate two small rear passengers, just like the Mercedes-AMG GT and Porsche 911.

Let’s dive deeper to know some exciting bits about this electric sports car concept - 

Sporty exterior with a large rear wing

The Denza Z features a sporty exterior design with a bold front lip and sharp LED headlights. Adding to its sleek and dynamic look are hidden door handles,  frameless windows, a rear diffuser, and large wheels. The concept model is also kitted with a large rear wing, which seems inspired by Lamborghini and Lotus sports cars.

Steer-by-Wire system

The EV has a steer-by-wire system, which means it does not have a mechanical link between the steering wheel and the front axle. Advanced AI algorithms power it and offer better handling and precise steering responses.

Fold-away steering wheel 

Another impressive feature of the Denza concept car is a foldable steering wheel. This means you can retract it under the dashboard when not in use, which enhances cabin space and safety during collisions.

Advanced suspension system

The advanced DiSus-Z suspension system, which we saw on the BYD Yangwang U7, is also available here. This next-level suspension system is equipped with a magnetic suspension motor that can adjust the damping force in just 10 milliseconds and offer exceptional stability and control. 

While the automaker is yet to reveal the Denza Z’s drivetrain specs, the EV may borrow a tri-motor powertrain from the Z9 GT that kicks out a combined output of 952 hp.

The Denza Z is expected to be priced at around CNY 300,000 (approximately equal to RM 180,104) in the Chinese market.
