Mazda CX-60 is finally out in the open

KUALA LUMPUR: After the introduction of the Mazda CX-50, the CX-60 became the next most anticipated model in the brand’s lineup. After teasing the SUV since the latter of 2021, Mazda has finally revealed its all-new, full-size, five-seater, the CX-60. And yes, as expected, it is offered in a plug-in hybrid version.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When will the new CX-60 go on sale?

The CX-60 will first go on sale in Europe this year and next year the automaker will introduce a new, larger, three-row model, like the CX-80.
  • What engine setup will power the new CX-60?

    Powering the new Mazda CX-60 is a 192 PS/261 Nm 2.5-litre four-cylinder ‘Skyactiv-G’ petrol engine mated to a 136 PS/ 250 Nm e-motor and a 17.8-kWh battery.
  • Powering the new Mazda CX-60 is a 192 PS/261 Nm 2.5-litre four-cylinder ‘Skyactiv-G’ petrol engine mated to a 136 PS/ 250 Nm e-motor and a 17.8-kWh battery. The total system output thus comes down to 327 PS and 500 Nm, making the CX-60 the most powerful car by Mazda yet.

The power is sent to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission unit that does without a torque converter. All this allows Mazda’s new SUV to complete the century sprint in just 5.8 seconds and a limited top speed of 200 kmph.

The SUV gets an i-Activ all-wheel drive system which allows shaft-driven transfer of torque between the axles. Also, part of the setup is regenerative braking that works together with a brake-by-wire system.

The CX-60 PHEV has a WLTP-rated combined fuel consumption of 66.67 kmpl and combined CO2 emissions of 33 grams per km. The e-motor is powered by a 335V, 17.8-kWh lithium-ion battery and it allows for up to 63 km of the emission-free driving range at speeds up to 100 kmph or less.

As for its charging, we don’t have much detail, however, as per Mazda with normal AC charger, the battery can get fully charged from empty in four hours.

Further, part of its performance case is the Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) that offers a few drive modes, namely EV, Towing, Sport, Off-Road, and Normal.

In the future, Mazda will expand the CX-60 engine range with two straight-six options - a Skyactiv-D 3.3-litre turbo diesel and a e-Skyactiv X 3.0-litre petrol unit with Spark Controlled Compression Ignition technology. Both the six-cylinder mills benefit from Mazda’s 48V mild hybrid system, the M Hybrid Boost.

On the suspension front thanks to its longitudinal engine layout, the CX-60 gets a double-wishbone at the front and an independent multi-link setup at the rear. Also, part of the kit is Kinematic Posture Control which helps reduce body roll and promote sharper turn-in.

Coming to the car’s design philosophy, the CX-60 follows the latest evolution of Mazda’s Kodo design philosophy based on the concept of ‘Noble Toughness’. Thanks to this the SUV showcases a deeply sculpted front fascia. Also, part of the car’s design kit is - a distinctive L-shaped lighting signature, corner air inlets on the lower intake, slim & horizontal taillights, quad tailpipe finishers, and aluminum wheels (from 18 to 20 inches).

The CX-60 is offered in three striking signature colours - new Rhodium White, Soul Red Crystal, and Machine Grey. Other available hues are Arctic White, Jet Black, Platinum Quartz, Sonic Silver, and Deep Crystal Blue.
