Proton Saga - What to expect?
Proton Saga is one of the brand’s most popular cars in the sedan segment. It was launched three years back and continuing its journey without an update. However, despite wearing the same silhouette for so long, its sales have never plummeted. In fact, it was only last month when Proton sold as many as 3000 units of the Saga. So, there’s no trouble finding buyers but one can not deny its dated looks that desperately needs a revision. Proton too seems to have acknowledged the fact and for quite some time now is seen working on Saga’s facelift. The first time we saw the Saga facelift though camouflaged was back in February. The next set of spy shots were captured in March, followed by May.
In this story, we are going to talk about the changes the new Saga is most expected to reflect. Also, with the recent launch of the 2019 Iriz, new Persona, and how can we forget the one that revolutionised the brand’s image, the X70, it seems pretty evident that new Saga will be a bang-on car. However, before diving in, we’ll also like to inform you that a new Exora is also on its way. Catch up the MPVs expected changes, here.
New design language
It all started up with the X70 and was then followed by cars like Iriz and Persona. So, now when a new Saga is scheduled for a revision, a change in design language is but obvious. While the ongoing car displays a simple design, the new Saga is expected to take things on a more dynamic side. Especially the front that currently displays a very basic design is said to receive some substantial revisions. Like the grille that’s now a straightforward chrome setup will be replaced by a new Infinite Weave unit. Moving on, the front bumper will also be in line with the Proton’s new design language. Also, we are expecting to see a new fog lamp setup, similar to the one seen in Proton’s latest facelifts. The side profile is expected to remain mostly the same. However, a new set of alloys might accompany the sedan.
Following the footsteps of its recently revised siblings, we are also hoping for a heavily revised rear. It’s currently very dull, and a little edgy will now enhance the appeal of the car. Also, from the spy images, the diffuser seems to be smoothened out.
Same old engine setup
The current model is powered by the popular and well-received 1.3-litre VVT mill that generates a maximum power of 94 hp along with a peak torque of 120 Nm. Transmission option includes a choice of either a 5-speed manual or CVT unit. The new model is expected to carry the same mill, however, slightly re-tuned or maybe not. Also, this time the Saga specs sheet might include a bigger mill apart from the 1.3-litre option.
New and improved cabin features
The one thing we are most excited about is new Saga’s upgraded cabin, both in terms of comfort and convenience. Also, seeing the amazing interior of the X70, new Iriz, and 2019 Persona, our expectation from the Saga is already high. If you look at the current model, you’ll find it very basic with features like 2-DIN radio that too only in the Premium model, manual air-con system to name a few. With the 2019 Saga, we’d like to seem a touch screen infotainment system, voice control, smartphone connectivity, online navigation, push start button, and like. As for the comfort, the Saga would continue to be a spacious car.
Safer than ever
With the new Saga, we hope Proton increases the safety shield of the car. Talking about the current model, the standard safety list includes front airbags, ISOFIX, pre-tensioner seat belt, audio seatbelt reminder (only driver), and immobilizer. Yes, that’s it, and the situation requires urgent change. We expect that like the Iriz and Persona, the new Saga too gets 5-star safety rating by ASEAN NCAP. Also, features like Anti-Lock Braking System with Electronic Brake Distribution and Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control System, Hill-Side Assist, front and rear parking sensor, and impact sensing door unlock should be made standard.
Price point
If the new Saga comes out as we are expecting it to be then an increase in its price is more than evident. The current Saga price bracket is RM 33,591 to RM 41,848, let’s see by how much they surge, we hope not much.
So, that’s what we are expecting from the upcoming Proton Saga facelift. What are your thoughts, do tell us in the comment section.
