Proton X50 Malaysia adds Quartz Black colour, remains top-selling SUV in 2026
KUALA LUMPUR: PROTON has added a new Quartz Black exterior colour to the Proton X50 line-up in Malaysia, extending the shade across all variants from April after the limited-run X50 Black Edition, based on the Flagship variant, sold out its 200-unit run in March.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What is new on the Proton X50 in Malaysia?
The latest update is a new Quartz Black exterior colour, now available across all variants from April. Is the Proton X50 still selling well in Malaysia?
Yes. PROTON says the X50 sold 3,265 units in March 2026 and 7,571 units in the first quarter of the year, keeping it as Malaysia’s best-selling SUV.On paper, this is just a colour update. In reality, it also shows how PROTON is trying to keep the X50 fresh in a B-segment SUV space that has become far more crowded than when the model first arrived in 2020.

With more rivals now fighting for attention, smaller updates like this still matter, especially for a model that already has strong public recognition and a loyal buyer base.
The choice of black is hardly groundbreaking, but it is an easy one to understand. It suits the X50’s styling well, giving the SUV a slightly more serious and cleaner look, while also broadening its appeal to buyers who prefer something less flashy.
On a design like the X50’s, with its strong front-end treatment, sculpted bodywork and sharp lighting signatures, a darker finish tends to make the whole thing look a bit more purposeful.
More importantly, the timing of this update suggests PROTON knows the X50 still has momentum and is worth keeping in the spotlight. The company says 3,265 units were sold in March alone, while first-quarter 2026 sales stood at 7,571 units, enough to keep it as Malaysia’s best-selling SUV for the first three months of the year.
That figure is also said to be 48% higher than the same period in 2025, which points to the facelifted model introduced in July last year still being well received by buyers.
That last bit is probably the real story here. The new colour is the headline, but the more useful takeaway is that the updated X50 still appears to be doing very well despite the flood of newer competition in the segment.
It is not just hanging on because of brand familiarity. The sales numbers suggest the revised model has managed to stay relevant, which is not something every ageing B-segment SUV can claim once fresher rivals start piling in.
PROTON is also using the announcement to remind buyers about its after-sales promises, which now form a bigger part of the ownership pitch than before. The package includes Fast Service for basic maintenance in 90 minutes, a 1-Day Service Delivery promise for broader servicing work, and a relief car plus complimentary one-time service if repairs take more than three working days.
That sort of support is worth mentioning because models like the X50 no longer sell on styling, features and brand pull alone. Buyers are comparing ownership experience more closely now, especially in a segment where choices are growing and expectations are higher.
So while Quartz Black is a cosmetic update, PROTON is clearly trying to package it together with the broader argument that the X50 remains an easy SUV to live with, not just an easy one to like in a showroom.
Commenting on the latest move, Dato’ Ir Abdul Rashid Musa, Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar said, “The Proton X50 is the company’s spearhead for its SUV range and has been an unprecedented success since its introduction in 2020. The success is built on the quality of the product and understanding of customer needs so the introduction of Quartz Black as a colour option, and the continued emphasis on customer experience are prime examples of our ethos.
“PROTON believes that today’s buyers are not just purchasing a vehicle, they are investing in an identity, a lifestyle, and a promise of reliability. Therefore, black is more than just a colour choice for the Proton X50 as it is a statement that aligns with the model’s reputation as a modern, stylish, and dependable SUV for Malaysians.”
