The upcoming Toyota GR Supra Sport might be called GR 010

KUALA LUMPUR: In Europe, Toyota has filed a trademark for the name, GR 010, and under usage, it's mentioned for 'automobiles and structural parts thereof'. On analysing a bit back and forth, it seems like the Japanese automaker is reserving the name for its upcoming GR Super Sport hyper car that recently made its first public debut at the 88th Le Mans 24 Hours at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

Nothing can be said for sure as a mere filing does not guarantee any car's arrival, let alone the GR Super Sport adopting the said name. However, its registered trademark does fit perfectly with Toyota's naming convention for race-only prototypes. For example, the 90s TS010 - a Group C prototype and the TS050 Hybrid that recently earned its third Le Mans victory. Further, GR in the registered name stands for Gazoo Racing, Toyota's motorsport division, and in-house tuning arm.

Speaking of the GR Super Sport, its racing variant is expected to participate in the 2021 FIA World Endurance Championship in the new 'hyper' class category, when the new regulations come into effect.

When initially demonstrated, the vehicle was powered by a 2.4-litre twin-turbo V6 engine along with a set of electric motors that together deliver 999 PS of power. However, with FIA regulation underplay, the power will be limited to 680 PS.

Shigeki Tomoyama, GR boss, at the time of the launch of the concept in 2018, said that the GR Super Sport was part of a more significant performance-based development for the brand's on-road range. He was quoted saying, "Although it will be some time before you all have the opportunity to get behind the wheel, I hope that the GR Super Sport Concept will give you a taste of what we aim to achieve with our next-generation [of> sports cars."

Earlier this year, CarAdvice reported that Toyota filed patent documents for an articulated canopy system. The said system is expected to make it to the road-legal version of the upcoming Toyota hypercar.
